checked the doors, saw the one that was ajar, and stepped to it. When he opened it and saw Clint Adams, he wasnât surprised.
âMore trouble,â he said.
Â
Clint looked at the sheriff as he entered.
âSame trouble,â Clint said, âjust double.â
Garver looked down at the bodies.
âAh, the Crespo boys,â he said. âThis is a continuation of the trouble you had at the poker table.â
âObviously,â Clint said. âNobody bothered to mention to me that he had a brother. Are there any more Crespo family members?â
âNot that I know of,â Garver said. âI think youâve wiped the family out.â
âThat wasnât my intention,â Clint said.
Garver looked over at the girl, who was fully dressed and sitting on the edge of the bed with the bodies at her feet.
âAmy,â he said.
âSheriff.â
âYou wanna tell me what happened?â the lawman asked.
âThey broke in shooting, and Clint shot them,â she said.
âThatâs it?â
âThatâs it,â she said with a shrug.
âAnd what were the two of you doinâ at the time?â Garver asked.
She smiled and said, âJust talkinâ.â
Garver looked at Clint, who stared back.
âOkay,â the lawman said, âIâll get some men to remove these bodies.â
âNo hurry in my account,â Clint said, picking up all his belongings, âIâm going to get another room.â He turned to the girl. âAmy?â
She got up from the bed and stepped into the hall with Clint, then turned to the sheriff and said with a smile, âWe havenât finished our conversation.â
TWENTY-TWO
Clint got a new room from the desk clerk, and he and Amyâthe name they finally settled onâreturned to what they were doing.
If anything, having two men shot dead at her feet seemed to fuel her passion even more. As soon as they got to the new room, she dropped her dress and tore at his clothes, pushed him down on the bed, and mounted him again. She rode him long and hard again and again, seemingly completely insatiable, until finally she seemed to tire herself out. She collapsed on him at one point, and they both fell asleep.
He awoke with her lying next to him, but on his left arm. The sun was streaming through the window, shining in his eyes but on her naked back. He pressed his hand flat to her smooth back and felt the warmth of the sun there.
Carefully, he eased his arm out from under her and then walked to the window to look down at the town. At least what had happened reaffirmed his suspicions from the night beforeâthere were two men watching his room from the street that night. At least he didnât have to keep looking over his shoulder for them.
âHey?â
He looked at the bed. She was propped up on one elbow. Her breasts made his mouth water, like two overripe melons.
âCome back to bed,â she said, reaching out. âItâs early.â
âI know,â he said. âI have to be somewhere.â
âReally?â
âYes, really.â
âThatâs too bad.â
âI promised a friend Iâd help him out.â
âOh, well, then,â she said, turning onto her back, âyou better go.â She tossed the sheet off so he could see her whole body.
Hurriedly, he got dressed.
âDoesnât it bother you that you saw two men killed last night?â he asked.
She laughed and asked, âDid it seem like it bothered me?â
âNo,â he said. âThatâs what I mean.â
âClint,â she said, âwhere I work I see a lot of shooting.â
âAnd do they all excite you like last night?â
âWell,â she said, âthat was a combination of the shooting, and you.â
He strapped on his gun and grabbed his hat, then walked to the bed. He ran his hands over her body, down between her legs, and
