reached her. âI couldnât hear over the babble of the masses.â She waved an arm to indicate the crowded, noisy restaurant.
Callum pulled out Louâs chair and then sat next to her. Across the table, Ellie sat facing them with her back to the rest of the restaurant.
âAcconcio,â Callum answered when Ellie hesitated. âHeâs never understood the word no.â
âOh.â Making a sympathetic face at Ellie, Lou said, âIâve heard he thinks heâs all that and a bag of chips with the ladies. Heâs never been pushy with me, thoughâprobably since he knows Callum would bring the pain if he tried. Or else he doesnât think Iâm hot.â
âI donât see how he couldnât,â Ellie said, needing to turn the conversation away from Joseph so her frantic heartbeat could slow. âFind you hot, I mean. In a purely esthetic way, of course. Iâm not hitting on you or anything, so I hope my saying that didnât just make things awkward.â
Lou was laughing by the time Ellie had finished her babbling monologue. âThank you.â
Even Callum was smiling, but he sobered quickly as he met Ellieâs eyes. âYou have to be direct with guys like that. Donât worry about hurting their feelings.â
âI know.â She flushed and dropped her gaze to the table, fiddling with the wire rack holding the salt and pepper shakers. âI just hate confrontation. Iâm kind of a wimp.â
Reaching across the table, Lou caught one of Ellieâs fidgeting hands and squeezed. âI used to be the wimpiest wimp that ever wimped, and even I managed to change. Just practice being firm. Itâll get easier.â
âThanks.â Ellie squeezed back and then withdrew her hand, desperately wanting to switch topics. Since her father was constantly on her mind, she went with that. âI know you said you didnât have much luck talking with Baxter, but did you see him at all?â
âNope.â Lou took the abrupt subject change in stride. âI tried going to Willardâs house, but your dad would never answer the door. Iâm pretty sure he was there, too, since I could hear him moving around inside. Either he was home, or thereâs some jumbo-sized pack rats in there.â
âProbably both,â Callum interjected.
âHeâs definitely not there now.â Ellie thought about the empty cabin, and she realized her fingertip was heading toward her mouth. Tucking it back into her lap, she locked her other hand around it to keep it still. âDo you think heâll even make it to the cabin?â
âDonât start thinking about possible bad scenarios,â Lou told her firmly. âYouâll drive yourself crazy. You have a planâgo to the cabin and see if Baxterâs there. If heâs not, then you can figure out the next step. No sense in worrying about it yet.â
Although Ellie knew Lou was right, keeping her ricocheting thoughts in line was easier said than done.
âSorry!â A heavy-set woman arrived at their table and began handing over menus and water glasses. âItâs crazy tonight. Not that itâs not crazy most nights, but the DuBois family was here earlier, so that put me behind.â
Lou winced. âMan, those kids are hellions. Did they decorate the walls with the pulled pork again?â
âHellions is a nice way to put it,â the server growled in a dark voice. âAnd I wish redecorating was all theyâd done.â Her tone lightened until it was almost cheerful. âIâll be back in a minute to take your order.â
âButâ¦â Lou trailed off when the woman headed toward another table. âShoot. Now Iâm dying to know what the DuBois kids did.â
âI think youâll survive the suspense,â Callum said dryly.
âI know.â Her tone was mournful. âBut Iâm just so
