God,
Heather,
Iâm so sorry.â Sam laughed, too.
âI didnât even recognize your voice. Wowâ¦â Suddenly he sounded much more serious. âHeather⦠How
are
you?â
âHow am I?â It seemed like a more complicated question than it should have been. âIâm⦠Iâm okay. I am truly okay, Sam. How are you?â
Sam seemed to have to pause and think about it, too. âIâm okay, too,â he said thoughtfully.
âWell,
okay.
â She tried to take in some good breaths. âSo I guess weâre both okay.â
âI guess we are,â Sam said quietly. âWho would have thought it?â
It was already so much more awkward than sheâd expected. Awkward but somehow⦠nice. Something about hearing Samâs voice made her feel happier and more nervous at the same time. Which, she supposed, was how heâd always made her feel. Giddy but insecure.
âWell, Sam, for both of our sakes, Iâm just going to get right to the point.â
âOkayâ¦?â He sounded a wee bit scared.
âDonât worry,â she assured him. âItâs nothing bad.â
âOh, good,â he said. âIâve lost all capacity for bad news. I kind of reached my quota, you know?â
âTell me about it. No, itâs not bad. I mean, I
hope
itâs not bad to you. I mean, I guess you could see it as bad, but Iâd hoped you wouldnât because⦠Ugh. Listen to me. I feel like Iâm twelve.â
âHeather,â he said in a calming tone. âWhatâs up?â
âRight. Sorry. Iâll get back to the point. The
point
is that, you know⦠Iâm graduating.â
âI know. You guys have made it through. Congratulations.â
âYes, thanks. I must say, it wasnât as easy as it was supposed to be. But thatâs still not the point.â
âI didnât think so.â
âNo⦠Nope. No, the point isâ¦â
Breathe, Heather. If this is your âgrown-upâ behavior, youâve got a hell of a ways to go.
âSorry. Okay. The point is, when we graduate, we also have this one last high school ritual known as The Prom.â
âYes. I am familiar with this ritual.â
âRight.â Heather laughed. âAnd Iâm kind of coming into this whole prom thing a little late. And the point is⦠well⦠I need a date.â
âAha. I seeâ¦.â Sam went silent. Heatherâs mouth went so dry, she couldnât unglue her lips from her teeth. âWell,â Sam said, âI mean⦠Iâm sure I know a few guys.â
There was a long silence on the line.
âOhâ¦â The air seeped out of Heatherâs lungs. Rejection number two. Her chest began to hurt. Her eyes stung from trying to fight off unexpected tears. âWell⦠yeah,â she uttered, trying to keep her voice from quavering with disappointment. âIf, uh⦠If you know someone whoâd be willing to take meââ
âHeather.â
âWhat?â
âIâm kidding.â
âYou are?â
âAre you asking me to the prom?â
âI was, yes,â she replied meekly.
âWell, I would be honored,â he said. Now she could hear his devastating smile over the phone.
She literally fell back in her chair, slapping her hand over her head with relief. The smile spread so wide over her face, it almost hurt. One of those tears sheâd been fighting off managed to escape from the corner of her eye.
âHeather, why didnât you just ask me in the first place?â
âI donât
know,
â she said, laughing out all her pent-up nerves. âI mean, after everything weâd been through, I didnât even know if youâd want to talk to me. I was afraid youâd say no.â
âWell, you were wrong. I think weâve both been through enough rejection, donât
