isâyou have not married.â
His eyes alight with laughter, Devenish exclaimed, âGood God! Do you fancy me to have lived a life of endless yearning for my unrequited love? To the contrary, my lad. Yolande was far wiser than I. Oh, damme! That donât sound very polite! What Iâm trying to say isââ He checked, with the sensitive manâs reluctance to put his inmost feelings into words. âI care for her deeply, and always will. Onlyâwhen a fellow wants very much toâer, to have a loving wife, a home, andâGod willingâchildrenâ¦â And he had to stop again, because he did want children so very badly, and now it appeared he would never have any of his own.
Lyon said earnestly, âButâwhatâs wrong with that? It is what every man dreams of, isnât it? To find a lady he can care for? To have a family?â
âYes. Butâsometimes people want it so much theyâsort of, mistake love of the dream forâfor ⦠Well, there are different types ofâof loving, I think. Sometimesânot often, I grant you, but, sometimes people share a devotion so equal, so intense, that from the very beginning they are like ⦠the two parts of oneâwhole.â His eyes had become sad, his voice remote. âYolande and Craig have that. Truly, a gift fromâ¦â He broke off, his face very red. âJupiter, how dashed sober we are! You have made me talk a lot of nonsense. Now, you shall tell meâdo you mean toâoffer for Josie when she comes home?â
Lyon groaned. âI know how I feel, Dev. ButâIâve still some years of work before I can start my own practice. Guy has settled a generous sum on me, as you know. Weâd not starve. ButâI cannot tell whether she feelsâ Sheâs so admired. So lovely and bright andâand altogether adorable. Andâmy fear is that ⦠she may choose Fontaine.â
âFontaine?â
Startled, Lyon saw Devenishâs face transformed. The eyes were slits of rage, the fine features flushed. A voice he scarcely recognized snarled, âHas Elliot Fontaine been slithering around Josie?â
âWhyâyes. How could you not know? They met at the Bolstersâ Spring ball.â
âI know that! Andâsince?â
âHere and there, I suppose. Heâs been away of late, but he is come back, and you may see him everywhere. Heâs very popular.â
âAnd very cunning, damn him! I have never once seen him hanging about her. By Gad, Iâd better not!â Devenish stood and stared southward. âIs he friendly with the Drummonds, do you know?â
Standing also, watching the savage wrath of the man beside him, Lyon said uneasily, âI cannot say. But I heard that he and Josie met again when you were in Town a few weeks back, andââ
âAnd she said nothing! The baggage! She knew damned well Iâd have his liver out, ifââ
âDev!â Lyon put one hand on the other manâs sleeve, then recoiled before the murderous anger he faced. âLord, man! What is it? What have you against him?â
Devenish glared at him in silence, then said in a more normal tone, âI know him, is all. I never dreamed heâd dare cast his filthy eyes at Josie, for sheâs quite beneath his touch.â
âI do not see that!â
âYou may not, but he does. If he wants her, itâs not as his wife, of that I do assure you!â
âWhy the hell not? Sheâs been gently bred up! Her birth may not beââ
âDefinitely not. Heâs from an ancient and proud house. Heâs not the kind to marry a girl with no background.â
Stung, and defensive of this apparent impugning of his adored lady, Lyon snapped, âThen you should not object to my offer! Iâll marry her tomorrow, if sheâll have me, and be proud to do so. We should suitâweâre both
