these days. Itâs weird.â
âNot too thin. Got it.â
âAnd no one who says âhella.â I hate that. What does that even mean?â
âNo âhella.â Done.â
This was one of Adamâs major issues when I first helped him: Heâs the most finicky guy Iâve ever met. He nitpicked everyone and everything. Girls were âtoo nice.â The air was âtoo breathable.â He once said that a sandwich was âtoo bready,â which I think pretty much defies the laws of sandwichness. Adam was hopeless when he came to me: Olivia is a total free spirit, and so, by conventional standards, she and Adam were polar opposites. But much like I did with his nose and those glasses, I helped Adam frame his weakness as a positive. Heâs reliable, organized, and steadyâvoilà : just the grounding presence Olivia never even knew she needed but soon couldnât live without.
The problem with free spirits both male and female, however, is that they can never truly be tamed . . . and then one day they stray.
âI canât believe she cheated on me,â he says. âI did everything right.â
âI know, man. It sucks. But unfortunately, it happens. So why donât we get back to basics. You know the drill. Be different. Notice her. Tell her. Letâs talk about how weâre gonna get you out of this rut.â
âHereâs the thing.â He pouts. âIâm busy. I have chess club Monday. Model UN Tuesday. Mathletes Thursday. Imissed anime club today because of this whole mess.â
God knows what happens if you miss anime club.
âIâm busy,â he repeats. âI need someone who understands how busy I am.â He starts to cry once more.
Having been the victim of epic heartbreak myself, I know that he is more than entitled to whine and sob all he wants. âItâs okay, Adam. Weâll find you someone who gets you and makes time for you.â
I let him blubber a bit more until he finally composes himself. I pull out some tissues from the pocket of my ÂWindbreaker and he blows his nose. I know Adam will come around to my thinking. Heâll listen. He always does.
âHereâs what I want you to do,â I say. âStart to consider if thereâs anyone at school you might be interested in. If thereâs a bright side to this, itâs that girls feel bad for a guy with a broken heart. You just got out of a relationship that ended through no fault of your own. I mean, youâre a hot commodity!â
âI am?â
âOh yeah. Sympathy is a major aphrodisiac. I know you donât trust the Galgorithm right now, but the week or two after a breakup is a great window.â
âI just donât know if Iâm ready.â
âAdam, thereâs no better way to get over an ex than to meet someone new. Thatâs just science.â
âHuh. Well . . . there is one girl Iâve kinda had a crush on.â
I sense an opportunity to really build up his confidenceand seize it. âThatâs great. And guess what? You donât even need me.â
âReally?â
âYeah. Adam, you were one of my best clients. Youâre outgoing. Youâre persistent. You donât need me to hold your hand anymore.â
This probably isnât true, but if it gets him out of his funk any quicker, thereâs no harm done.
âSo . . .â
âSo I want you to find that girl you have a crush on, go right up to her, and do your thing.â
âAny girl?â
âAny girl. The world is your oyster,â I say.
âIâm allergic to oysters.â
I sigh. âHow about carpe diem? Does carpe diem work for you?â
âIt does. Thanks, Shane.â
âNo problem.â
We both stand up and start heading back to the parking lot. Iâm shivering.
âBy the way,â I add, âsince when are you so emo?â
âWhat do you
