worry,â Tutt said, âI wonât.â
He started for the door. She grabbed his arm and said, âDave!â
He shook her off and said, âIâll be back in time for supper.â
He went out the door.

Hickok sat in the Straight Flush Saloon, an empty beer mug in his hand. He was wondering if he should have another or go out and get some air. But he knew that if he saw Dave Tutt in the street, and he was wearing his watch, something bad would happen.
On the other hand, if he stayed inside, people might start to think he was afraid to walk the streets. He couldnât have that. At the first sign of weakness, gunnies would be coming from all over to take their shot at Wild Bill Hickok.
So he decided against the beer, and for the walk.

Levi Rawson entered the saloon and joined Buck Williams at his table. Rawson wore a blue shirt, a vest, a black hat, and black leather gloves to match.
âHeard you wanted to see me.â
âYou hear about Leo Worthy?â
âSome stranger came to town and gunned down him and his friends,â Levi said. âWhy should I care about that?â
âWell, they say he was pretty fast, gunned down all three of âem before they could clear leather.â
Levi looked interested.
âIs that a fact?â
âI know some said they never saw anythinâ so fast.â
âWhat about Hickok?â
âHeâs playinâ poker and drinkinâ beer,â Williams said. âAnd pretty soon him and Dave Tutt are gonna slap leather. You donât wanna get in the middle of that.â
Levi didnât respond.
âI got some help for ya,â Williams said. âWe donât want him to get away with this, Levi. We canât have his kind cominâ in here and shootinâ our people.â
âHis kind?â
âA gunman.â
âYou mean, like me?â
âYou live here,â Williams said. âThatâs different.â
âWhatâs this Jasperâs name?â
âClint Adams. Ever hear of him?â
âNo,â Levi said, âbut that donât matter.â
âYou take âim,â Williams said, âand maybe Hickok could be next.â
âYeah,â Levi said, âmaybe.â
They sat in silence for a few minutes, Williams giving Levi time to think.
âYou want a beer?â he asked.
âWhere is this Adams now?â
âGant is tailinâ him.â
âGant?â
âYeah,â Williams said, âhim and McQueen will back your play.â
âAnd what about you?â
âMe, too,â Williams said. âI wouldnât miss it.â
âThen letâs go and find him, and get it done,â Levi said.
âNow?â
âRight now,â Levi said, getting to his feet. âWhy waste any time?â
âYeah, okay,â Williams said. He finished his beer, stood up. âLetâs go.â
âMcQueenâs outside,â Levi said.
When they got outside, McQueen straightened up from the post heâd been leaning against.
âWhereâs Gant?â Williams asked.
âKeeping an eye on Adams.â
âWhere?â
âHow am I supposed to know?â McQueen complained. âI was gettinâ Levi.â
âTake it easy,â Levi said. âWeâll find âim. Letâs check the saloons.â
âGood idea,â Williams said, looking at McQueen. âWeâll check the saloons.â
Levi took the lead, and the others followed.
TWENTY-TWO
Clint entered the small saloon, which was almost empty, and ordered a beer from the sleepy bartender.
âNot much going on, is there?â Clint asked.
âNot here,â the bartender said. âNot ever here.â
Clint turned to glance at the door, waiting for the man who had been following him to come in. He didnât.
He never did.
