you.â
He wasnât sure why her approval pleased him, but he knew it did. She tilted her head as if trying to see him from a new angle.
âThis is your room,â she murmured. âLike the study.â
âI suppose you could put it that way.â
âGood.â She sipped at her drink. âIâm beginning to like you, Jordan. I almost wish I didnât.â
âWe seem to have the same problem.â
With a nod, she moved away. âPool, huh? Donât let me interrupt you. Iâll just finish my drink before I head back into the maze.â She glanced around the room again. It was the only room in the house, other than the study, where she felt comfortable. âIâd like to talk to you about the book when youâve finished it, Dr. Rhodes.â
âOf course.â Her smile, he thought, was indeed very appealing. âPerhaps youâd like to join us for a game, Miss Wyatt,â he offered, surprising himself.
âThatâs very nice of you.â She smiled again and watched with affection as he straightened his shoulders. âIâm sure youâre betting, though, arenât you?â
âThatâs not necessary,â Harry said.
âOh, but I wouldnât want you to change the rules for me.âKasey sipped again and eyed a pool stick. âWhat are the stakes? Perhaps theyâre in my range.â
âIâm sure we can accommodate you, Kasey.â Jordan paused to light a cigar. âHow about a dollar a ball?â
âA dollar a ball,â she repeated and approached the table. âLetâs see, how many are there?â She frowned and counted. âFifteen. I suppose I can handle that. How do you play?â
âRotation might be simplest,â Jordan commented and glanced at Harry.
âFine.â The older man began to chalk his cue.
âRotation,â Kasey repeated, then smiled as Harry handed her his cue. âWhat are the rules?â
âThe object is to sink the balls into the pockets in chronological order,â Jordan explained. She was wearing earrings tonight, he noticed. Small silver hoops that caught the light. Even across the table, her scent reached out to him. He brought himself back. âOr hit the next ball in order into another and sink that one, or as many as possible. Hit the cue ball, the white one, knocking it into the other balls from the lowest number to the highest. The object is to clear all the numbered balls from the table.â
âI see.â Kasey frowned down at the green baize and nodded. âIt certainly sounds simple enough, doesnât it?â
âYouâll catch on, Miss Wyatt,â Harry told her gallantly. âWould you like to practice first?â
âNo, why donât we dive right in?â She sent him another smile. âWho goes first?â
âPerhaps youâd care to break,â Harry continued, feeling expansive as Jordan racked the balls again. âJust hit the cue ball into the rack. Whatever drops in is yours.â
âWhy, thank you, Dr. Rhodes.â Kasey walked down to the end of the table.
âHold the cue this way,â Jordan instructed, positioning her fingers. âKeep it steady, but let it slide through. See?â
âYes.â She glanced over her shoulder at him. âIâm to smack it into the ball marked one, right?â
âThatâs one way to put it.â He could kiss her now, he thought, right now, and send Harry into apoplexy. He could smell her hair as he stood over her, feel the smooth skin of her shoulder under his hand.
âI wonât be able to hit anything on the table if you keep looking at me like that,â she murmured. âAnd Dr. Rhodes is beginning to blush.â
He stepped away. Kasey took a moment to steady herself, then bent over the table and shot.
She sank three balls on the break. Moving around the table, Kasey positioned and shot again.
