enjoying the view.”
“What? You can’t do that! Come untie me,” she pleaded.
I laughed. “Okay, fine.” I sat up and reached over to untie her blindfold first then her wrists. She slumped down on the bed and let out a long sigh as her eyelids fluttered shut.
“I hate to cut the party short, but I’ve got to go in a few minutes. Which means, you’ve got to go.” I swung my leg over the side of the bed and stood up. “It’s been fun, babe.” I winked to her as I headed to the bathroom to get ready.
CHAPTER 2
SAM
My phone buzzed across the countertop as I added the last touches of mascara to my eyes. I closed the tube of blackest black makeup and tossed it in the drawer before glancing down at the new message from Jessie on my screen.
Jessie and I had been best friends since the third grade, back when bonds were formed solely based on your soccer team during recess, and boys were only known for the cooties they carried. A lot had changed since then, friends had come and gone and countless boys had gained and subsequently lost their allure, but our bond had always remained strong. Jessie had just turned 23 the week before and my turn was coming up quickly. She had guilted me into going to some off-road, dirt filled bro fest with her. She’d put on her big sad puppy dog eyes and pleaded, ‘C’mon it’s for my birthday. I promise you’ll have fun, and there will be tons of hot guys there.’ Now, Jessie and I had very differing definitions of ‘hot guys’, which was probably one of the reasons we’d always gotten along so well—no guys to fight over, but I’d agreed to join her.
I responded.
I grabbed my purse off the dresser and took one last glance at my hair in the mirror that overhung it. I’d just had my hair done the day before, and although I didn’t particularly like drawing attention to myself, I loved how the platinum blonde color shone in my reflection. I spun around and headed out.
Jessie’s lifted, white pickup truck sat parked on the front curb and she yelled out to me through the open window. “Damn girl, I told you that skirt would be perfect on you!”
I uncomfortably pulled the black mini skirt that Jessie had lent me down as far as possible, which wasn’t very far, before jumping up into the passenger seat. I shifted in the seat, tugging on the hem again. “I don’t know how you wear these all the time, Jess. I feel like I might as well have just forgone the clothing altogether. Could have just worn my panties.”
She smiled at me and let out her contagiously bright laugh. “Well, that’s also an option. I can assure you that you wouldn’t be the only one walking around in booty shorts.”
I playfully rolled my eyes at her. “Great. What the hell kinda place are you taking me to?”
She leaned forward and turned the ignition. The truck roared to life. “I promise it will be fun. Katie just sent me a text and she said the freestyle moto guys are going to be putting on a demo in an hour or so.”
Jessie had always been the partier, the wild girl who everyone knew and loved. I, on the other hand, was much more reserved and well, for lack of a better word, tame. About a year ago, she had gotten a job as a spokes model for an energy drink company, and she loved everything about the lifestyle she led. While she traveled around wearing teeny tiny outfits and partying, I spent my time working in a local bookstore. I think the fact that we were so different was what had made our relationship so strong. We’d been through what felt like everything together over the years, and our diverse tastes did nothing more than expand each other’s scope of life. So while I’d never really watched motocross before, I had to admit I was sort of excited for the new experience.
“Cool. I’d love to see that live.”
Her grin widened as she stepped on the gas and pulled out onto the
