Yeah, I
bet she would think I was a sick pervert after I told her about my
idea. Maybe I should go in slow and take it one step at a time.

My phone rings and it is
the soon-to-be ex-wife, Catherine. Wondering what she wants, I
answer. "Hello."

    Oh yeah, I knew her
parents would be pissed that I left her and, of course, her dad wants
to have a talk with me. He has been calling me non-stop since she
told him. I don't know how long they expected us to be unhappily
married. Catherine and I were best friends growing up, had one stupid
drunken night and they expected us to be adults and get married. I
don't know what is worse, the fact that in the 6 years we have been
married, I lost my best friend, or the fact that in the end we came
out with absolutely nothing. Our parents run in a tight knit circle
and they wouldn't have wanted their reputations ruined by their
children's wild night. I was just finishing up with my residency at
Flagler Memorial when I was offered the attending position.

    We were on cloud nine
and Catherine threw a big bash in my honor. Who would have known that
we would have gotten so wasted and ending up having sex? Too fucking
drunk to remember to put the damn condom on and bam, six weeks later
we find out she is pregnant. Our parents flipped out when we told
them so they planned a fast, but extremely fancy, wedding before she
started showing. Here we are, six years later getting a divorce. Five
months into her pregnancy she lost the baby due to some complication,
and it has been a huge cloud over our heads ever since. Sure, at
first I didn't want a baby, but then it became so real and I was
getting excited. We never felt it kick, but it was real. After that I
couldn't bring myself to leave her. I always felt obligated and she
didn't want our parents to be mad.

Her voice is soft on the
other end. "Hi, I just missed you and wanted to make sure you
were okay. I know we're over, but you have been my best friend since
I was 6 so, yeah, I just missed you."

    "I know what you
mean, Cathy. I just well...what do I say to make it easier?" I
tell her.

    "Chance, just tell
me you love her. Tell me that now we will both find happiness,"
she utters.

    I should have known she
would know there is someone else. We both didn't love each other the
way married people should, but we still loved each other enough to
know what the other was thinking.

    "Cathy, I love her.
She is who I wanted my life to end with before all this happened. I
love you as my lifelong friend and I love you for our memories, but
we are adults and we can't live in that house, waiting to get out. It
was time," I explain to her as caring as possible.

    "I am so happy that
you have found someone. I only want the best for us both. I'll be
back next week to start sorting through the house. I think it is best
we sell it and move on from it all, but I hope we can still remain
friends after everything," she points out.

    "We will always be
friends. No hard feelings here, just memories. Tell me what you need
me to do to help with the transition and I'll get it done," I
tell her.

    "Sure we will. I
will let you go now and call you next week when I get to town."
Her voice cracks a little when she says goodbye.

I know it is hard for
her because I feel the void of not having my friend around after a
lifetime of seeing each other almost every day. I don't think we
spent a total of 3 weeks apart if you added all the days together.
Our families vacationed together so we were only apart in college
really and even those were just miles apart. Big life changes but I
need Laney. I want her to be the end of my story, my forever after.

    I drive my car tonight
because I am wearing this tux and the last thing it needs is bug guts
stuck to it when I get there. I pull into the hospital and notice
Laney's car parked in the back where she usually parks. It must be
out of habit to park so far out. I walk in and get stopped what feels
like
