that.”
â€œOkay, let’s start with this. Let’s focus on the feelings you have for him and forget about proving something to him. What did you think the first time you saw him?” I ask.
    â€œHe’s smoking hot.”
I chuckle at her honesty and remember thinking the exact same thing. “Okay, so honest is good, but maybe it’s too much. Did your stomach flip? Did you begin to sweat? What kind of reaction did you have to him?”
Kristen squints her eyes, thinking back to that morning. “My heart was definitely racing, but I didn’t sweat. Gross.”
Yet my hands sweat every time I lay eyes on him. She’d definitely have something to say about that.
â€œThat’s a start,” I say. “You could say something like ‘When I see you, my heart dances.’ ”
â€œIsn’t that kind of corny?” she says, frowning.
â€œYeah,” I agree. “How about ‘You set my heart on fire’?”
â€œOoh! That’s good! Write that down.” Kristen taps the paper lying on the table between us.
I grab a pencil from her open binder and scrawl the phrase on the back of her letter. “What kinds of things do you want to do with Rock?”
She arches an eyebrow. “Do I really have to spell it out?”
â€œOkay, you little hussy, keep it clean. What would be your dream date? Maybe you should ask him out.”
â€œMe? Ask a guy out? I don’t think so,” she snorts.
â€œYou’re already going to be with him on Friday night. What’s the big deal? Do you want to go out with him or not?” I ask, frustrated at her stubbornness. If I thought Rock would say yes and it wouldn’t obliterate my friendship with Kristen, I’d have asked him out the first day we met.
    â€œWell, yeah, but …”
â€œNo buts. This is your chance to show him you’re a risk taker. That you’re not afraid to go after what you want, especially him.”
â€œThere’s always the movies,” she offers with a shrug.
â€œThat’s your dream date? Come on, you can do better than that.” I shake my head and do the thinking for her. There has to be something unique they can do. Something Rock probably hasn’t done or seen before.
â€œI’ve got it,” I tell her. “How about the Aquarium? You could go there for dinner. I doubt he’s been there before and even if he has, it’s still a great date restaurant.”
â€œI love that place. Definitely.” She taps the paper again. “That should do it. Let’s go send it.”
â€œNow?” I ask, head spinning. Surely she doesn’t think I’m going to be able to just whip this out in thirty seconds.
â€œYes, now. When else?” She stands and walks to the bank of computers lining the perimeter of the library. “Come on.”
Fighting every shred of common sense inside me, I stuff the novel into my binder and follow her to the computer, where she’s already busy logging on. I stand behind her, letter in hand.
She opens her e-mail account, clicks Compose, types in Rock’s e-mail address—which she’s already memorized—and stands. “It’s all yours.”
Of course it is, I think as I take a quick glance at the clock, then drop into the seat. “We’ve only got eight minutes.”
â€œThat’s more than enough time for a supersmart genius like you. Get busy.” She rubs my shoulders like she’s prepping a boxer for the next round.
I shake her off. “Back up a little. Geez.”
She plops into the seat next to me as I put my hands on the keyboard, staring at the flashing cursor. It’s totally mocking me.
Tapping my fingers on the keys, I look at my notes, then begin typing. After a couple of false starts, I finally get in the groove and the words flow. Kind of.
I know this may seem a little forward, but I have to tell you that every time I
