that.â
âOkay, letâs start with this. Letâs focus on the feelings you have for him and forget about proving something to him. What did you think the first time you saw him?â I ask.
âHeâs smoking hot.â
I chuckle at her honesty and remember thinking the exact same thing. âOkay, so honest is good, but maybe itâs too much. Did your stomach flip? Did you begin to sweat? What kind of reaction did you have to him?â
Kristen squints her eyes, thinking back to that morning. âMy heart was definitely racing, but I didnât sweat. Gross.â
Yet my hands sweat every time I lay eyes on him. Sheâd definitely have something to say about that.
âThatâs a start,â I say. âYou could say something like âWhen I see you, my heart dances.â â
âIsnât that kind of corny?â she says, frowning.
âYeah,â I agree. âHow about âYou set my heart on fireâ?â
âOoh! Thatâs good! Write that down.â Kristen taps the paper lying on the table between us.
I grab a pencil from her open binder and scrawl the phrase on the back of her letter. âWhat kinds of things do you want to do with Rock?â
She arches an eyebrow. âDo I really have to spell it out?â
âOkay, you little hussy, keep it clean. What would be your dream date? Maybe you should ask him out.â
âMe? Ask a guy out? I donât think so,â she snorts.
âYouâre already going to be with him on Friday night. Whatâs the big deal? Do you want to go out with him or not?â I ask, frustrated at her stubbornness. If I thought Rock would say yes and it wouldnât obliterate my friendship with Kristen, Iâd have asked him out the first day we met.
âWell, yeah, but â¦â
âNo buts. This is your chance to show him youâre a risk taker. That youâre not afraid to go after what you want, especially him.â
âThereâs always the movies,â she offers with a shrug.
âThatâs your dream date? Come on, you can do better than that.â I shake my head and do the thinking for her. There has to be something unique they can do. Something Rock probably hasnât done or seen before.
âIâve got it,â I tell her. âHow about the Aquarium? You could go there for dinner. I doubt heâs been there before and even if he has, itâs still a great date restaurant.â
âI love that place. Definitely.â She taps the paper again. âThat should do it. Letâs go send it.â
âNow?â I ask, head spinning. Surely she doesnât think Iâm going to be able to just whip this out in thirty seconds.
âYes, now. When else?â She stands and walks to the bank of computers lining the perimeter of the library. âCome on.â
Fighting every shred of common sense inside me, I stuff the novel into my binder and follow her to the computer, where sheâs already busy logging on. I stand behind her, letter in hand.
She opens her e-mail account, clicks Compose, types in Rockâs e-mail addressâwhich sheâs already memorizedâand stands. âItâs all yours.â
Of course it is, I think as I take a quick glance at the clock, then drop into the seat. âWeâve only got eight minutes.â
âThatâs more than enough time for a supersmart genius like you. Get busy.â She rubs my shoulders like sheâs prepping a boxer for the next round.
I shake her off. âBack up a little. Geez.â
She plops into the seat next to me as I put my hands on the keyboard, staring at the flashing cursor. Itâs totally mocking me.
Tapping my fingers on the keys, I look at my notes, then begin typing. After a couple of false starts, I finally get in the groove and the words flow. Kind of.
I know this may seem a little forward, but I have to tell you that every time I
