what hotel he was in, Red.â
âI did,â Red said, âbut I wanted to make sure it was the same man, so I went and had a look myself.â
âAnd . . . ?â
âHe caught me followinâ him.â
âWell, this fella must be good,â Appo said. âHeâs caught you twice.â
âHeâs the Gunsmith, George,â Red said. âHeâs a legend.â
âSo I hear,â Appo said. He was pretty used to being on the receiving end of all of Redâs adoration, so he was feeling a tingle of jealousy as the boy talked about Clint Adams.
âWell, I guess itâs not such a coincidence that heâs here in New York,â Appo said.
âHe musta come lookinâ for Bethany and Ben, huh?â Red asked.
âItâs more likely he doesnât know who heâs looking for, Red,â Appo said. âItâs probably Willie, since heâs the one who killed that woman.â
âThe Gunsmith is lookinâ fer a killer?â Red asked. âBut he ainât a detective.â
âApparently that doesnât matter. Red, what hotel is he staying at?â
âThe Belvedere.â
âA favorite hideaway of Captain Byrnes when he has a dignitary in town,â Appo said. âI think there is also a telegraph office a block or two from there.â
âSure is. We passed it while we was walking to the restaurant.â
âWell,â Appo said, âmaybe I ought to have a talk with the clerk there.â
âYou think the Gunsmith sent a telegram to somebody? â Red asked.
âThatâs what Iâm going to find out, my boy,â Appo said.
âIâll go with you,â Red said.
âNo,â Appo said. âYouâre no good to me now when it comes to Adams. Heâs seen you twice. And, obviously, heâs fed you.â
âReally well!â
âThen I suppose heâs managed to earn himself one fan in town,â Appo said.
âDonât worry, George,â Red said. âTo me youâre still the greatest.â
TWENTY-ONE
When Bethany came out the next morning, she found Ben sitting on the front steps. She sat down next to him and bumped his shoulder with hers. She loved him dearly, but as a brother. She wished that was enough for him.
âHey,â she said.
âHey, yourself.â
âStill sulking?â
âNaw,â he said, âIâm over that. Now Iâm just angry. â
âJesus, Ben,â she said, âyouâre always angry.â
âYeah, I know,â he said. âI feed on it.â
âI think it feeds on you,â she said.
âIâm gonna have to go and see Ma today,â Ben said. âYou wanna come?â
âNo,â she said. âI never like to see her unless I have to. And I donât want to see how she treats you. When do you figure Willie will get here with the goods?â
âAnother few days, at least,â he said.
âGood,â she said. âThe longer I go without seeinâ his ugly face the better.â
âYou and me both. You see George last night?â
âYeah. I ate with him and Little Red at the Metropole. â
âThat little guyâs got a bad crush on you,â he said.
She nudged him with her elbow and said, âThat makes two of you, huh?â
He leaned away from her.
âDonât tease me, Bethany. You know how I feel about you.â
âI do know, Ben,â she said, âand I try to make light of it. It ainât right. Youâre my brother.â
âHalf brother.â
âStill . . .â
âIâm sorry,â he said. âItâs just how I feel.â
âYou have to find a nice girl, Ben.â
âBethany,â he asked, âwhat would a nice girl want with me?â
Clint approached the clerk at the front desk and had to admit to himself he didnât know if it was Owen or
