come by on a daily basis to service him, even if he did make sure to please her each time as well.
For one thing, she had better things to do with her time than to take care of his needs. She had her son, and she had a jewelry making business. She didn’t have time to come over and bounce on his lap every day, no matter how much it looked like she’d enjoyed it.
She’d brought muffins. Was that her way of saying thanks? Good-bye? Was she simply being neighborly, or had she used the muffins as an excuse to see him? Maybe what she’d really wanted was to be fucked again.
C’mon, Kenny. You weren’t that good. Sure things had been great between them, but that was mostly because of Holly. She didn’t see him as a man in a wheelchair, she saw him as a man, period. And, for the life of him, he couldn’t think of a better turn-on than that.
So what did he think of Holly? She was sexy as hell, for one thing. And he’d been honest when he’d told her she was a good mother and a hell of a jewelry designer. But was there more to her than those things? Was he capable of feeling something more for her?
A few days ago he would have said no. But after spending the weekend with her, he wasn’t sure. Losing Karen and Scott had left him with no hope of ever wanting a relationship again. Now, he wasn’t so sure.
    * * *
Holly stared at the phone, trying to think of a way to invite Kenny over without sounding desperate. She’d seen his therapist drive off over an hour ago, and she’d been sitting at the breakfast bar, staring at the phone ever since.
It wasn’t a big deal. She could simply invite him to lunch. But what if he was tired of her? They’d spent all day Saturday and most of Sunday together. Naked. Maybe that was enough for him. Although they’d never officially agreed to have sex for the simple sake of having sex, it had been implied that that’s all it would be.
And maybe he would get the wrong idea if she called him and asked him to come over. Maybe he’d think that she’d assumed they were seeing each other, or something like that, when nothing could be further from the truth.
Until a few days ago, she’d never thought of him as anything more than her neighbor. Libby’s brother. The man in her sexual fantasies. Nothing more.
He wasn’t her friend, and he certainly wasn’t her boyfriend. Or was he?
Either way, it didn’t mean that she couldn’t be intimate with him again, did it? There were never any rules that said they would only do it that weekend and then pretend it had never happened. She sighed in frustration.
Sex with Kenny had been better than she’d imagined it would be. He was a remarkable lover, always making sure she was satisfied. Unlike Greg, who had sometimes gotten his jollies and then rolled over and gone to sleep. Without a care in the world for her needs.
Well, she didn’t need to worry about her ex-husband anymore. She’d told Kenny the truth when he’d asked if she still loved Greg. She’d fallen out of love with him a long time ago. The only thing she missed about him was being a family.
Holidays weren’t fun when she had to share Jordan with his father. Without Jordan, she was lonely. And yet there was nothing she could do about it.
But that didn’t mean she couldn’t control other aspects of her life. Tired of being a coward, she picked up the receiver and dialed Kenny.
    “Hello?”
Holly cleared her throat. “Hi, Kenny. It’s me. Holly. From next door.” She raised her eyes to the ceiling. I must sound like a complete moron.
    “Yes, I remember you.”
He was teasing her. “Yes, well, I was wondering if you were hungry. I was about to make a sandwich and thought maybe you’d like to join me.”
“To be real honest, I just wolfed down three of the blueberry muffins you made. I’m kind of full at the moment.”
    “Oh. So you liked them?”
    “Yes, thanks.”
She sucked in a breath and let it out slowly. “Well, okay then, maybe some other time.”
