nodded. âIt sounds like you did a great deal of research. Excellent work, Kenzie.â

Mickey couldnât wait to find JC in the cafeteria and tell him the news.
âWhat was the verdict?â he asked as she raced over to his table.
âHe loved it. He gave me a four plus.â
âAre you kidding me?â JC gasped. âNo one gets a four plus in Kayeâs class. I doubt even Bridget Lee herself would get a four plus. Mickey, you did it!â
Mickey felt like she was walking on air. Nothing could bring her down, not even Jade strolling over to their table.
âI hear FAB has a new fashion star.â She smiled sweetly. âCongrats, Kenzie.â
âUm, thanks,â Mickey said. âThatâs really nice of you, Jade.â
âOf course it is!â Jade smiled brightly.
âI guess FAB has a new fashion diva, and itâs not La Lee,â JC teased her.
The smile vanished from Jadeâs face. âWhat do you mean?â
âI just mean that Mickey is giving you a run for your money,â he replied. âI wouldnât be surprised if she won Runway Showdown this semester.â
Jade gritted her teeth. âIâm going to win Showdown,â she said.
âYa think?â JC mocked her. âI wouldnât be too sure about that.â
Jade turned to Mickey. âLetâs be clear: thereâs only room for one design diva here, and thatâs me. You got lucky this timeâthanks to me taking you shopping. Youâre welcome!â
She turned on her wedge heel and strutted back to her table of minions.
âSheâs delusional,â JC said. Then he noticed Mickeyâs worried look. âYou okay?â
Mickey shook off Jadeâs nasty dig and tried to remind herself that she had won this fashion challenge all by herself and wowed her teacher. Her design was great, and no one could take that away from her.
âIâm more than okay,â she said. âIâm just getting started.â
âEarth to Mickey? Come in, Mickey!â her mom said, waving a plate of chocolate chip waffles under her nose. She placed a tall glass of chocolate milk next to it. âItâs not like you to let your favorite breakfast get cold.â
Mickey sighed. âSorry, Mom. I was just thinking.â
Her mother pulled up a chair at the kitchen table next to her. âOkay. Spill. Whatâs bugging you?â
Mickey didnât know where to begin. When she came home this weekend to Philly, all she could think about was her Apparel Arts final challenge. Mr. Kaye was going to reveal the theme on Monday, and sheâd have only a month to design and construct it.
âI just really want to show everyone I belong at FAB,â she said quietly.
âOf course you belong!â her mother insisted. âYouâve been getting straight As in all of your classes. I couldnât be prouder!â
Mickey nodded. When she told her mom about the four plus on her fashion design, she left out the part about her masquerading as âKenzie Willsâ to win everyone over. What would her mom say if she knew that she was lying every day?
âI know what would cheer you up! Letâs hit the flea market,â her mom said, sipping her coffee.
Mickey nodded. âI could use a few new outfits for school,â she said. âMaybe some cashmere sweatersâ¦â
Her mom nearly spit out her coffee. âCashmere sweaters? Since when do you like cashmere sweaters? Your taste has certainly changed since you started at that school. What happened to the girl who made her own patchwork pants out of some old tablecloths?â
âIâm just trying to fit in,â Mickey insisted. âYou should see how Jade dresses! Everything has a designer label.â
Her mom looked concerned. âYou never used to care what other people wore,â she reminded her. âDonât you always tell me,
