the previous night.
âEverything was exactly as per normal. Not a word out of the ordinary. Not a hair out of place.â
âAnd did he make a drink?â
âHorlicks. For sure.â
âSo whatever heâs been up to didnât happen.â
âNo.â
âAnd did you sleep?â
âHardly a wink. Once Jack left this morning I collapsed into my chair.â She demonstrated collapse in the Lunghisâ chair.
âMrs Shayler,â Gina said, âmy husband followed your husband to work today. And Mr Shayler did not take the route you gave us.â Gina described Angeloâs observations, including the two-minute stop.
Mrs Shayler was devastated. âThis canât go on, Mrs Lunghi. It will kill me. This has to be resolved. It has to be resolved now.â
Angelo appeared in the office at a few minutes before four. He opened the door slowly. He saw there was no computer terminal on his desk. âIs it safe?â he asked.
Gina, who sat at the desk, didnât say anything to her husband.
Angelo entered the room. âHas the computer man been?â
âHeâs with Rosetta,â Gina said.
âIs it that Adrian chap?â
âNo. Someone else. He has a moustache.â
âBut heâs still here.â Angelo considered. âI want to be in position for Jack Shayler at five. I can go early.â
âNo,â Gina said. There was no playfulness in her voice.
âGina?â
âThe computer man is running wires through all the walls. Your terminal will be installed tomorrow. We have other business.â
âYou want a cup of tea?â
âNo.â
The signs were of something serious. Angelo sat down.
âMrs Shayler,â Gina began. âShe wants all stops pulled out. She canât bear the uncertainty. Whatever it takes.â
âSo what does it take?â Angelo asked.
âShe wants us to confront him. But first she wants us to put a bug in her telephone.â
âDid you ring Norse?â Norse Electronics was the company the Lunghis hired their equipment from.
âNo,â Gina said.
âNo?â
âFor six more days we have an Adrian Boiling bug of our own. I took it out of our telephone and I set it up at Mrs Shaylerâs.â
âGood,â Angelo said. âGood, good.â
âBut,â Gina said, âI put in a fresh tape.â
âWe have some cassettes, donât we?â
âI found them,â Gina said. âItâs all set up at the Shaylersâ.â
âSo what plan did you decide?â
âTomorrow morning follow the husband again. Then back to the house to check the tape. If something on it explains whatâs happening, fine. But if there isnât, we stop him on his way home from work. You decide where. Maybe at the bench.â
Angelo nodded but said, âWhat do we say to him?â
âWe say weâve bugged his telephone. We make him ring home and get his wife to look for the bug. We pretend weâre nothing to do with her.â
âWho are we to do with?â
âAnybody. We bluff, maybe make threats. Then we leave him.â
âThe idea being?â
âBecause itâs something from the outside that heâs brought into their home, Mrs Shayler can ask him whatâs going on.â
âWhere otherwise she couldnât,â Angelo said.
âWhere otherwise she couldnât,â Gina said.
âOK,â Angelo said. âSo who intercepts Shayler? Me? Sal?â
âI think both of you.â
âGood. We can work something up.â Angelo thought about it. âBy then weâll have spent most of her money. But maybe the case will be over.â
âThereâs something else,â Gina said.
âWhat?â
âWhen I put the bug in at Mrs Shaylerâs, I came back here. And there was nothing much I could do here while the computer man was back and forth
