he had reached the stage where such a thing was wholly unnecessary. With his incredible strength, speed, and skill at practically any and all forms of combat, there were few who could hope to challenge him. When he factored in his ability to hypnotize and sway the minds of those who might wish to do him harm, it became even less of an issue.
Obviously, it was not his own fear that rent so viciously through him. It had come and gone in the mere blink of an eye, for no apparent reason. He stood on his patio, gazing out into the lighted gardens, surrounded by nothing but peace and serenity — his own personal turmoil excluded, of course.
So, whose fear had he felt so keenly?
He reached out and touched the minds of those closely connected to him. Armand was in the study, reading. Kristoff was in one of the guest rooms with three human females — pleasuring one with his mouth, one with his hands, and one with his cock. Jason was checking the perimeter while Zarek replenished his strength in the kitchen.
One by one, he touched upon each of those in his bloodline and found them all to be peacefully engaged in whatever they were doing.
Vlane frowned. Had it been, perhaps, some long forgotten bond reconnecting? While Vlane had always been a responsible sire, there were those who had chosen to go on their own. Was one of them in danger now? It was unlikely. The sensation had passed and he felt no further tug upon his blood bonds.
He tried to recall what he’d been thinking when he’d first felt it. Ah, yes. The fragile female dressed as a lovely faerie who had so captured his attention...
And then, just like that, he knew whose fear he’d sensed. It had been hers ...
He reached out desperately again, but found nothing. No fear. No panic. Nothing, except perhaps the slightest hint of familiarity. Of recognition.
The realization hit him like the proverbial brick upside the head.
He had bonded with the female.

Chapter 9 – Under Watchful Eyes
A na shook her head as brute after brute carried in supplies, stocking the cupboards, pantry, and refrigerator. When she asked them what they were doing, they just grinned and told her to take it up with the Alpha. Ana planned on doing just that, but it would have to wait. She had a full day of appointments and she was already running behind. Lack of sleep coupled with sexual frustration had a way of doing that to a girl.
Dani arrived in the midst of it all, glowing with approval as she viewed the massive quantities of food. Although female and significantly smaller than the males in the pack, Dani managed to eat as much in one day as Ana did in a week. The she-wolf once told Ana Were metabolisms ran much higher than a human’s and shifting alone required a tremendous amount of energy.
She greeted the brutes with grins and high-fives, slinging what appeared to be an overnight bag onto one of the oversized sofas in the living space. Ana took one look at the bag and gazed at Dani questioningly. “More food?”
“Hardly,” Dani laughed. “I was hoping you’d let me crash on your couch for a couple of days.”
Ana narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “Why?”
“Matt’s being an overbearing, testosterone-fueled, unreasonable jerk.”
Ana hid the twitch of her lips. “He won’t let you go on the overnight, huh?” she guessed. Every year a bunch of the young adults took a road trip into the mountains. From what she understood, it was a pretty wild time. She wasn’t at all surprised Matt didn’t want his little sister going along.
“No,” Dani said with a pout that could have rivaled the best Hollywood starlet’s. “Maybe next year, when you’re finished with school,” she mimicked, deepening her voice in an attempt to capture Matt’s growly baritone.
Ana held her hand up to her mouth to stifle her giggles. Dani had her brother’s stern glare and growly voice down perfectly.
“He says I’m too young, but Jackie — you know, the sleek black one? — gets to go.
