if I get to know you better, I may like you. Or, you might decide you don’t like me after all.”
Xavier lifted her hand to his lips and kissed her gently. “Princess, there is no chance of that happening.”
The tension eased. Meals were ordered and the men discussed the development proposal further.
Callie brought Aline up to date on the latest University gossip while they ate.
The evening passed quickly. The food was excellent and before long they were gathered outside where Aline had to say goodbye to her parents.
Linc hugged her first and peppered her cheeks with kisses. “I love you so much, sweetheart. Please take care of yourself and be careful.”
“I promise, I will, dad.” Tears pricked her eyes.
Alistair leaned over and gathered her into his chest as he kissed her forehead and cheeks. “Love you to the moon and back, darling girl.”
“Moon and back, daddy.” Tears rolled down her cheeks. “I wish you didn’t have to go.”
Alistair hugged her again. “Not long baby girl. Give him a chance. I think he’s a good man and I think he could give you a powerful love.”
The two men hugged and kissed Callie and shook hands with Xavier. They had arranged to meet him at his office when he next was in Dalton.
After the men walked away, Xavier turned to the girls. The upset on Aline’s face as she watched her father’s disappear into the dark, broke his heart. “I’ll go and get the car,” he said softly before striding away.
Aline swiped at her tears. “I hate saying goodbye to them. I wish they would let me fly home when I don’t have classes for a few days.”
“They’ve told you, it would be too tiring. You would wear yourself out.” Callie reminded her.
Aline had cried, stomped her foot, and argued that it wouldn’t make her tired but the men refused to give in.
Xavier’s car came to a stop directly in front of them. Once the girls were comfortably settled, he eased the vehicle into the traffic and headed back to the University.
Aline felt bone tired by the time they arrived at their building. Xavier pushed her chair into the foyer.
“Go on up, Callie,” Aline said. “I want a word with Xavier.
“Are you sure?” Callie asked. “How will you manage the lift?”
“I can get her on down here if you don’t mind waiting and helping her out upstairs,” Xavier said.
“I won’t be long,” Aline assured her friend.
Callie pushed the button of the lift, the doors slid open and she stepped inside. “Goodnight, Xavier and thank you for this evening,” she said before the doors closed.
Xavier moved Aline into a corner which afforded them a little more privacy, He crouched by the side of the wheelchair and gathered Aline’s hands into his. She didn’t pull away. It was a start.
“What did you want to talk about, princess?”
“I wanted to make sure you understood. I will date you, as I said before, because I wish to get to know you. It will give you an opportunity to find out if what you feel for me is real or infatuation fueled by lust. If we develop feelings for each other, then, and only then, will I move in with you when we return to Dalton. I will not come to your bed before then.
Xavier groaned. “Six months.”
“I couldn’t allow it now even if I wanted to, which I don’t.”
He gave her a confused look.
“My leg.”
“Oh, of course. Very well, I will accept your requests but make no mistake, what I feel for you is real not infatuation. Of that, I am very sure.”
“Believe what you will. In the meantime can I please ask that you don’t flaunt our relationship in front of the other students?”
“I’ll try but you lead me to distraction and I can’t promise I will always think clearly when you’re around.”
Aline laughed. “You are a smooth talker. Please take me to the lift, I’m extremely tired. Thank you for an interesting evening.”
“Of course darling.” Xavier stood but instead of moving to the back of the chair as Aline
