mother for once forgetting Dougal. âWhen am I going to meet him, then?â
âOh, not just yet,â Chrissie answered. âBut you will meet him, Roz, I promise, and then youâll understand why I think heâs so nice. Meantime, whatâs happening with you? Whenâs your new boss starting?â
âNext week,â Roz said swiftly. âIâm already collecting for Mr MacKennaâs leaving present. Weâre going to get him a new briefcase.â
âAnd then heâll be away?â asked Flo. âShame, eh? When you got on so well?â
âHeâll have a day to show Mr Shield the routine and then heâll be off to Aberdeen.â Roz sighed. âSold his own house here, you know, in no time at all. Some friend wanted it and Mr MacKenna let him have it without it going to sealed bids, which is just the sort of thing he would do.â
âYouâll just have to hope that this new chap is as nice,â Chrissie told her comfortingly. âHeâs younger, anyway.â
âAs though that matters,â said Flo, looking into space. âI wonder when Dougalâs coming home for that weekend he mentioned? I hope he wonât be wearing his uniform.â
Oh, dear, thought Roz, catching Chrissieâs eye. There they were â back to Dougal again. She supposed it was only to be expected.
The big day came at last â Mr Shieldâs first and Mr MacKennaâs last. Roz, who had spent half the previous night worrying what to wear, eventually wore what she usually wore to work â white blouse, dark jacket, dark skirt â and arrived at the office hoping to be first there. Mr MacKenna, however, was already at his desk, with Mr Shield in his formal suit with hair well flattened sitting next to him, surrounded by files and papers.
âAh, hereâs Miss Rainey,â Mr MacKenna said cheerfully, as both men rose to their feet. âSheâll soon sort us out.â
âIâm not late, am I?â she asked, as Mr Shield favoured her with his smile. Mr MacKenna smiled too.
âHavenât we had this conversation before? No, itâs just that we came in early, to get on with the handover.â
âIs there anything I can do?â asked Roz.
âI donât think so, thanks. Iâm just going through my notes and the legal stuff with Mr Shield here.â
Roz hesitated, her thoughts concerned with the presentation of the briefcase that was to take place in the afternoon.
âWill you be going out to lunch at the usual time, Mr MacKenna?â
âOh, yes, Mr Banks is taking us both out, with the partners.â Mr MacKenna looked apologetic. âSorry we couldnât all have gone.â
âThatâs quite all right.â
She smiled, aware of a sympathetic look in the new lawyerâs eyes. As though sheâd expect to go out to lunch with Mr Banks and the partners! From the door, she asked if they would excuse her as she must just check something with Miss Ward, and as they returned to their files she sped along the hall to Norma at Reception.
âThe briefcase,â she said to Norma urgently. âItâs still there under the counter, eh?â
âSure it is. Why wouldnât it be?â
âI donât know, Iâm just worried because I had to collect the money and help Mr Newman choose it, then wrap it up and all that. If anything happens to it, Iâm responsible.â
âHonestly, anybodyâd think it was the royal regalia!â Norma cried, laughing. âLook, here it is, and our farewell card as well, with all our signatures.â
âOh, thanks, thatâs grand.â Roz studied the large parcel wrapped in red paper and tied with a bow. âJust as long as we know where it is when itâs time for the presentation.â
âThatâs not till this afternoon.â
âI know.â Roz laughed. âShould be back from their
