donât know.â Aidan shook his head. âCould have been the same thing that stalked you and Blaze.â
âPoor Meadow,â Issie said. âCan we give her a proper burial tomorrow under the magnolia trees?â
Aidan nodded. âCameron will want to see her first. Heâll need to figure out what it was that killed her. But yeah, of course we can.â
As they reached the veranda, the lights came on inside the manor. âAidan! Isadora! Whatâs happening out here?â Aunt Hester emerged, wrapping her dressing gown around her.
âItâs Meadow. Sheâs been attacked,â Aidan said. Hester turned quite pale.
âIs she all right?â
âSheâs dead,â Aidan confirmed. âIâve moved her into one of the stalls in the stables. I figured Cameron could check her over in the morning.â
âPoor little Meadow!â Hester shook her head.
âI saw it, Aunty Hess!â Issie said. âThe Grimalkin. At least I think I did. It was on top of the cattle pens and then it was gone⦠If weâd only got there soonerâ¦â
Hester put her arm around Issie. âIsadora, thank heavens you didnât get attacked by that thing. If you two and the dogs hadnât turned up and scared the Grimalkin off when you did, it may have hurt even more of the animals. Aidan, are all the animals safe for the night?â
âIâve checked all the horses,â Aidan told her. âTheyâre all OK. Iâm going to take one last check around the farm now and make sure everything is secure before I go back to bed. You two go inside and Iâll see you both in the morning.â
Hester nodded. âIâll report this to Cameron first thing. Come on, sweetie, itâs two oâclock. Letâs get you inside and back into bed. Iâll make you a hot milk to help you sleep.â
The hot milk did help. Issie didnât wake up again until nine a.m. When she finally came downstairs to breakfast Aidan was waiting for her at the kitchen table.
âHow are you feeling?â he asked.
âUmmm, OK, I guess,â Issie replied.
âI checked all the animals again this morning,â Aidan said. âTheyâre all fine. Whatever it was that killed Meadow is hopefully long goneâ¦â
âIf weâd only got there in time to save herâ¦â Issieâs voice was wobbly. She felt like she might cry and fought hard to hold back the tears.
âI still canât imagine what kind of animal would make those wounds.â Aidan shook his head. âWhen Cameron arrives you can tell him what you saw and he can take a look at Meadow â maybe heâll have some ideas.â Aidan picked up his riding gloves from the kitchen table and stood up.
âMeanwhile, weâve got training to do.â He smiled at her.
âWe? You mean you and me?â Issie squeaked.
âSure,â Aidan said. âDidnât Hester tell you?â He looked at Issieâs shocked face. âI guess she didnât. OK. Well, Iâll head down to the stables and get the horses ready. You have some breakfast and then meet me at the round pen. Weâre doing some trick training.â
âReally?â Issie felt a shiver of excitement run up her spine.
âSee you there in fifteen!â Aidan said, already disappearing out the door, heading for the stables.
Issie felt almost too nervous to eat. Trick riding! It was just like in the movies. She managed to calm her butterflies enough to cram down a piece of toast and jam and then ran all the way down the driveway to the stable block where Aidan already had Diablo, Blaze and Paris saddled up and waiting at the side of the round pen.
âThis is where we do most of the stunt training,â Aidan explained. âIâve been working on this stunt lately, I call it a âFlying Angelâ. Iâve been training Paris to do it with Diablo, and
