son.â
âOr daughter,â she muttered as she rose, but had the feeling the king wasnât listening. She also had a very bad feeling about spilling her guts. Somehow she knew it was all going to come back and bite her in the butt. As if she didnât already have enough problems.
Â
Twenty minutes later Cleo lay stretched out on her bed, sipping tea. The odd-smelling concoction actually made her feel better. She put the cup back on the saucer, then set both on her nightstand. Maybe a nap would make her feel better.
But before she could even close her eyes, her bedroom door burst open. Zara stormed into the room.
âYouâre pregnant and you didnât even tell me?â
Chapter Five
âS houldnât you still be opening presents?â Cleo asked, knowing it was a feeble attempt at distracting Zara.
âShouldnât you be telling me something this important?â Zara stalked to the edge of the bed and crossed her arms over her chest. âHow could you keep this from me?â
Cleo could have gone head-to-head with Zara in a snit, but the hurt in her sisterâs eyes made her feel like slime.
âIâm sorry.â She sat up and leaned against the headboard. âI guess you ran into the king.â
âYes. He came to talk to me about the presents, then managed to let it slip that youâd confessed you were pregnant. He thought I should know, which is more than you thought.â
This is what she got for trusting a man, she thought glumly. She could feel the situation spinning out of control. Who else had Hassan told, and what was going to happen if Sadik learned the truth?
She didnât want to think about that now, so she pushed those thoughts from her mind.
âYouâre getting married,â Cleo began slowly. âI wanted this time to be about you. If Iâd told you, you would have gotten all worried and wanted to fix things.â
âExactly. I care about you. I want to know whatâs going on in your life. Donât you think this was a big deal?â
âIt is,â Cleo admitted. âIâm sorry.â
Zara didnât look mollified. âSo whoâs the father?â
âNo one you know.â Cleo shrugged and tried to look like she wasnât lying. âAfter I went home, I met someone.â
Zara didnât look convinced. âFunny how you never mentioned him in all the phone conversations weâve had.â
âI didnât know if it was serious.â
âItâs serious enough that you got pregnant.â
This was not going the way Cleo had hoped. âZara, Iâm going to be fine. I donât want you to worry about me.â
âI canât help it. Youâre my little sister.â Zara climbed up onto the mattress and settled next to her. âWhat I donât understand is how this happened.â
Despite her concerns, Cleo couldnât help smiling.
âThe usual way. I would have thought youâd figured out the facts of life by now.â
Zara rolled her eyes. âYou know what I mean. Youâve been sexually active for a long time. How come you got pregnant this time?â
âBad timing,â Cleo admitted. âIâd gone off the pill to give my body a rest. I wasnât expecting to get involved with someone so I wasnât prepared.â
Zara looked stunned. âYou had unprotected sex?â
âWe used a condom, but things happen.â
Actually what had happened was that one night she and Sadik had been so hot for each other, theyâd both forgotten birth control. She hadnât even realized it until several days later, when sheâd been on her way home. They had been irresponsible, and now she was paying the price.
âI canât believe this,â Zara breathed.
âTell me about it.â Cleo looked at her sister. âI know youâre upset. This is exactly why I didnât want you to know. The thing
