apologize to her? I was supposed to take her to that damn charity ball the other night, but I couldnât because I was in jail, so she went with some other guy and guess what? They have a date tonight.â
âA date?â said Shelby.
âThey went to dinner, la-de-da.â
âHow do you know?â
âI was over there.â
âAt Ninaâs?â
âNo. At Rickieâs. He picked her up at her place of business, do you believe that? Didnât even have the courtesy to call for her at home. The jerk.â
âHow do you know heâs a jerk?â
âHeâs an architect. He wears glasses. His name is Daniel.â
âSounds like a jerk to me,â said Bobby.
âIf he wasnât a nice guy, Nina wouldnât date him,â said Shelby.
âOh, I donât know. She dates McKenzie.â
âWay to stick up for me, Bobby,â I said. âYouâre a real pal.â
âAnytime.â
âItâs probably for the best,â I said. âI should be moving on anyway.â
Shelby stood abruptly, balled her hands into fists, and pressed them against her hips. She looked down at me and spoke without blinking.
âDonât. You. Dare.â
âWhat?â
âDonât you dare. Every time you become involved with a woman you do this.â
âDo what?â
âYou start looking for something, anything, as an excuse to break up. âJust didnât work out, time to move onââyou always say that.â
âI do not.â
âAlways.â
âNa-uh.â
âYou want a list? Should we start with Annie?â
âWhatever happened to her?â Bobby asked.
âShe. Married. Someone. Else.â
âOh.â
âWell, what am I supposed to do?â I asked. âNinaâs dating this guy. . .â
âAn architect,â said Bobby.
âYou can start by apologizing for standing her up,â she told me.
âI did.â
âDo it again.â
âBut it wasnât my fault.â
âIt. Doesnât. Matter.â
âIt really doesnât,â said Bobby. âIâve apologized to Shelby for a lot of things that werenât my fault, and . . .â
Shelby gave him that look. You know the one I mean. Bobby turned and stared past the porch toward Merriam Park as if there were something out there that was suddenly very interesting.
âMcKenzie,â Shelby said. âSheâs the best of them. Mary Beth, Annie, Judy, Theresa, Robin, KirstenâNina is the best of them.â
âNo, youâre the best of them.â
âBalderdash.â
âBalderdash?â
âIâm just the excuse you use. You pretend to be in love with your best friendâs wife, and since you canât have her, you wonât marry anyone. âPity me, the poor lonely bachelor.â Itâs balderdash.â
âThereâs that word again.â
âIf I were suddenly freeâif Bobby got hit by a truck tomorrowâitâd be the same olâ thing. Just didnât work out, time to move on.â
I looked at Bobby.
âItâs true,â he said. âIf it wasnât, I would have blown your brains out back when we were in college.â
âItâs fear of commitment,â Shelby said. âThatâs what weâre talking about.â
âBalderdash.â
Shelby looked at me as if I were nuts.
âYou said it first,â I reminded her.
âWeâre trying to cut down on the cursing because of the girls.â
âYeah, but do you really want your kids to go around saying balderdash?â
Shelby refused to be distracted.
âSheâs the best of all the women youâve known, McKenzie,â she said. âShe really is.â
âI know.â
âWeâll make Moorhead buy drinks at Ninaâs place,â Bobby said. âHe can apologize to her at the same
