hut.
âThereâs no one in Delagadoâs,â Alana said.
Kevin looked at me. âLuca, where did they take her?â
I didnât want to say anything, but it was hard not to point out the obvious. âI have a feeling Delgado isnât telling you the whole truth,â I said.
âWhat do you mean?â
âIsnât it clear? He needs your inheritance to finish the hotel for himself, to run on his own.â
âNo, heâs protecting my parents. Heâs hiding them from the investigators and helping them finish the hotel. Heâs keeping them safe, thatâs all.â
âSo why would he take Esme?â
Kevin sat down on the bed and put his head in his hands. âI donât know. Maybe he thinks Esme is here to turn in my parents.â He looked up at us. âWe have to wait. Heâll be back. He wants to run the hotel with my parents. It means everything to him.â
âSo much that he has taken your parents and Esme hostage?â I said.
Kevin shook his head and scowled. âNot hostage,â he said. âTheyâre hiding in case someone comes down here to investigate. Heâs protecting them, covering for them.â
âIt sounds dodgy,â I said, but he didnât seem to hear me. âHave you even seen any paperwork for the hotel? Are you sure Delgadoâs name is on it?â
âTheyâre at the hotel!â he said. âThatâs where Delgado would take Esme. Heâs probably just making sure she isnât a federal investigator or something.â Kevin was up and out the door without another word.
âThis is crazy,â Alana said.
âWelcome to my life,â I said as we ran after him.
The hotel was empty. Kevin ran from room to room calling out Esmeâs name. He had been camping out in the hotel.
âWhat now, Kevin?â I said.
âWe wait until Jose and Delgado bring Esme here. Thatâs what will happen,â said Kevin. âThey arenât criminals. They wouldnât do anything to her.â
âAre you sure?â I asked.
âYes, Delgadoâs notâ¦heâs not like that.â
âWell,â Alana said, âIâm hungry. Iâm going to get us some food. You know, just in case they donât get here for a while.â
She disappeared down the beach toward the village. Kevin and I sat and watched the waves roll in, one after another, in that slow, mesmerizing way they do. It was easy to see why someone would build a hotel here.
âYouâve been living here?â I asked.
âYeah. In one of the more finished rooms. Jose brings me water and stuff.â
âWhy?â
âWhy does he bring me water?â
âNo, why are you living here? Why not stay at Delgadoâs?â
âI wanted to be here in case someone came to look at the hotel. Like a federal investigator or whatever. Then weâd know if anyone was onto it. But no one has shown up yet.â
âI still donât get why you canât just be with your parents if theyâre hiding out.â
âWe have to make sure no one is watching me.â
I looked around at the swaying palm trees and barren beach. If anyone was watching Kevin, they were doing so with an incredible amount of stealth.
Alana returned with a lobster, mahimahi and fresh fruit. We started a fire and cooked everything together in a pot. The sweetness of the fruit blended with the lobster meat and fish. We ate quickly, starving after the energy weâd used on the waves.
âWeâll wait for Jose,â Kevin said every few minutes. âYouâll see, everything will be fine.â I couldnât take it anymore. I had to say something. âJose. The same Jose who cut me off in a wave and drove me onto the reef yesterday? He almost killed me. Plus, I trashed my board. Thatâs when I saw you on the beach.â
âJose had nothing to do with it,â Kevin said.
