young people.
Dr. Grimes, his vinegary face wrinkled in a smile, said, âAh, Mrs. Dunn, this roast beef is delicious.â
âThank you. Have some more dumplings, Dr. Grimes. I remembered how much you liked them.â
âI must make a point of coming down to visit more often.â
âGood!â cried the Professor. âAfter a month or two of Mrs. Dunnâs cooking and my music, youâll be a different man.â
âReally? Who will he be?â asked Dr. Quibberly, absent-mindedly.
âOh, heâll still be Dr. Grimesâbut a fat and jolly-looking Dr. Grimes,â laughed the Professor.
Dr. Quibberly raised his head and peered at Dr. Grimes. âI find it impossible to imagine such a thing,â he said.
âNothing is impossible to imagine,â said the Professor. âTo a scientist, all things are possible. And the next step is to make them happen.â
âLike your computer, eh, Bullfinch?â Dr. Grimes said. âThat is, if it really works.â
âI think I may confidently say that you will be surprised,â said the Professor.
Danny groaned.
âWhat did you say, Dan?â his mother asked.
âErâI saidâuhâplease pass the data.â
âThe what?â
âI mean, the dumplings.â
Dr. Quibberly was saying, âAnd do you mean that you can really give instructions to your computer by simply speaking to it?â
âExactly. You know that the large digital computersâlike International Business Machinesâ large computer Number 705, for instanceâhave push buttons for the memory address selector. However, my machine can receive instructions and addresses by the voice pattern coming through the microphoneââ
âAnd does it reply with a voice?â asked Dr. Grimes.
âNo, no. By means of an electric typewriter. I have also eliminated punch cards, because of my new magnetic tape.â
âFantastic.â
âYes, it is. Danny can tell you about it. Heâs seen it in operation and has been keeping it up to date for me while Iâve been away. Havenât you, Dan?â
âEep!â said Danny. He managed a faint shadow of a smile. âIâI sure have, Professor,â he got out, at last.
Mrs. Dunn served dessertâfresh, hot peach pieâand Danny could not manage to eat more than two pieces. Then he leaned over and whispered something to Irene.
The Professor pulled a number of sheets of ruled paper from his jacket pocket. âNow, gentlemen,â he said, as Mrs. Dunn cleared the table and brought out the coffee, âbefore we go in for the first tests, let us program our material. I have blanks right here on which we can set down the necessary operations and addresses.â
âIs your programming similar to that used for other computers?â
âIn general, yes.â
They drew their chairs close together and began to work. An hour went by and then the Professor gathered together the papers.
âI think,â he said, âweâre ready to begin.â
He pushed back his chair and rose. âDanny, my boy,â he said, âyou may lead the wayâ¦â
He pulled off his glasses and looked round the dining room.
âWhere is the boy?â he asked.
âHe has probably run out to play with his little friend,â said Dr. Quibberly.
âHmm. Thatâs strange. I was sure heâd want to see this,â said Professor Bullfinch. âWell, we will have to commence without him. Please follow me.â
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Sabotage!
Danny and Irene were not playing. They had slipped out to the laboratory, where Danny once again tried to find out what was wrong with the computer. He examined the social studies report carefully in the hope of finding a clue, and once more checked over all the parts of the machine. He stood up, at last, wiping his forehead, and said, âI give up.â
âPerhaps
