other three women were all gathered about a
camp fire, a slab of meat roasting over it.  The aroma filled Kaia with an
intense hunger.  She had eaten so scantily since she had been here.
“Welcome, sister Kaia,” chimed Gisli and Lilja
together.  As usual, Synnove, the alpha female, ignored her.  Kaia didn’t take
it personally.  She supposed she had seen her share of human women come in and
out of their camp.  Likely she didn’t feel the need to get to know them until
it seemed they were actually going to make it through for the long haul.
Gisli rose up and gathered some food.  When she
walked over and handed Kaia the cloth filled with a generous portion of meat
and warm bread, Kaia truly was grateful.
    “Thank you, Gisli.”
Gisli smiled.  “Sure.”  Kaia thought she was
really a very pretty girl, with her curly red hair and green eyes.  They had to
be about the same age.
Hungrier than she had ever been in her life,
Kaia scarfed the food down, listening as they talked.
“Kaia,” Astrid began, “I know you are scared and
feeling a bit resistant.  But keep in mind that this will all go much better if
you do not resist, but rather embrace it as the true honour it is.  It is our
place to do what we can to help you learn how to do this, just as it was Dane’s
during this past week.  Soon, we will begin the preparation ritual for the
mating.  Please open yourself to the process.”
At the mere mention of his name, Kaia
stopped listening.  She felt her body respond, her mind floating off somewhere
else.  She couldn’t deny that she was more than a little anxious to see him
again, even if it had to be under these circumstances.  It had been a long two
days without a single glimpse of him.  She wondered if he had been thinking of her,
too.  But then her mind replayed his last words to her and she bristled against
her foolish thoughts.
I am nothing more than just another female to
him to which he was assigned to carry out his duty.  He said as much himself.  He
fulfilled it and now he is done with me until duty calls again.  In a matter of
weeks, he will be assigned to woo yet another scared, young captive female.  I
must rid myself of these feelings I foolishly believe I have for him.
Snapping Kaia out of her trance, Lilja told her,
“Here, smoke this.”  She placed a roll of something between her lips. “It will
help you relax.”
She took a short puff off it and choked.
“Breathe it in slow and deep,” Astrid
instructed.  “Let the essence of the herbs flow through you so that they may be
of benefit to you.  Soon you will be feeling so good, you won’t care about
anything else.  I promise.”
Kaia tried again, taking it in with a slow, deep
breath.  She instantly noticed the difference, as the foreign substance filled
her chest and head.  After a few more puffs, it was working its way through her
entire body.  And just like Astrid had said, she was filled with a sense of
relaxation.  She took another puff and then another.  Before long, she felt as
if she hadn’t a care in the world.
Astrid stood and announced to the small group of
women, “It is time for the cleansing ritual.”
Kaia giggled.  Mostly because of the silly sound
of what the beta female had said.  Suddenly, she felt as though she were in a
dream.  A really bizarre dream.   She decided right then to go along with
it and make the most of whatever else happened in this crazy dream.
“I’m pleased to see you are more relaxed,”
Astrid remarked, leading her by the arm to a vat of water.  She twisted Kaia’s
hair into a crude chignon atop her head and secured it with a couple of twigs.
“Step into the water, Kaia,” Astrid instructed.
Kaia attempted to do as she was told, though she
found she was so relaxed she had trouble even lifting her leg.  Of course, her
weakened condition at having been half starved and locked up for the past ten
days might have also had something to do with
