their relationship. I had never seen Trinette so broken up over that man. Especially after the way she had been treating him, messing around with everything with three legs and a lucrative bank account. Eventually she had come to her senses and begged Leon to take her back. If he had asked me, I would have told him to make her ass sweat for a while, but not Leon. The second she promised to be a faithful wife and sit down and have some babies, he took her back with open arms. Trinette had been faithful for a year and a half and then look what happened.
â Ohmygoodness! Nikki, youâre so right. I donât even know why Iâm tripping. Leon loves me too much to question anything! Heâll fall in love with my child and would do anything in the world for me. Iâm definitely having him hire a full-time nanny to help take care of this baby.â
I rolled my eyes. Now thatâs the Netta I know.
âWhat did the doctor say about your kidney?â A couple of years ago Trinette had done an unselfish act of donating one of hers to her mother.
âShe said something about my kidney not being directly involved with the reproductive system, but thereâs still a chance that a full term pregnancy may cause a strain on my remaining kidney.â
âOh no! That doesnât sound good.â
Trinette blew out a dismissive breath. âIâll be fine. Dr. Brown said sheâll keep a close eye on it. But since Iâm in such good health she didnât seem overly concerned.â
I had to smile at the suddenly positive attitude. âWell, then thatâs one less thing we have to worry about.â
I heard laughter on the porch and remembered my husband was waiting anxiously to eat. âLook, I better let you go so I can get dinner on the table. Iâm happy for you, Netta. Just hang in there and Iâll talk to you tomorrow.â I hung up the phone and grabbed the tossed salad from the refrigerator and carried it over to the table. Once everything was ready, I stepped out onto the porch and was surprised to see Lorenzo Wade standing there. He and Donovan owned the barbershop A Cut Above the Rest. He looked spooked when he saw me.
âHey, Nikki.â
I took in his freshly creased jeans, wifebeater, and clean white Air Force Ones. He was a tall, cocky dude with peanut butter brown skin, short dark hair, and a beard that he kept fresh. Lorenzo and Donovan had been friends since high school. I could only stomach his cocky attitude in small doses. But if heâs the reason why my husband was laughing, something I hadnât heard in a while, then I guess I would learn to tolerate Lorenzo just a little more.
âWhatâs going on? You here for dinner? I made plenty.â I even gave him a half smile. That fool looked dumbfounded.
âUh . . .â His voice trailed off as he glanced nervously over his shoulder at Donovan, who was sitting on one of my wicker chairs, playing ball with Aiden.
âNah . . . baby. Lorenzo just stopped through for a sec to holla at me.â
Something was going on. Donovan was looking everywhere but at me. Lorenzo, I noticed, kept glancing down at the corner. I followed the direction of his eyes and at the end of the block I saw a familiar white car with tinted windows pull to a complete stop. Lorenzo saw it, too, and started grinning like a damn fool.
âYo, Donovan, Iâm gonna run up the street for a second. Iâll be back.â He tried to sound as convincing as possible, but I knew better and he knew it, too, thatâs why he dropped his head and hurried off my porch and down the sidewalk.
I felt my eyebrow inching up. âWhatâs he up to?â
Donovan met my gaze with a blank stare, then handed Aiden to me. âIf Tammy calls, heâs over here having dinner with us.â
âSay what?â I said with attitude. âSo now weâre covering for folks?â
I leaned over the edge of the porch so
