her shoulder. But then she noticed a white envelope sticking halfway out of the side pocket. Curious, she took it out and opened it. Inside was a piece of paper with a typed message. The message read: âWe know what youâre up to. But does your father? Forget about finding us, or weâll arrange a meeting with himâby the diving pool. How long can he hold his breath?â
Chapter
Ten
I UNDERSTAND WHY youâre worried, Nancy,â Carson Drew said after she had called him at his law office and explained what had happened. âBut Iâm leaving for New York tonight, remember? Iâm going straight from the office. Actually, I have to leave in ten minutes or Iâll miss the plane.â He laughed lightly. âI think Iâll be safe between here and the airport.â
âIâm not worried about right now, Dad,â Nancy said. She knew her father was leaving townâhe was going to visit some friends and attend a lawyersâ meeting in New York for aday or two. So she had rushed straight home from the club to warn him before he went. âIâm worried about when you come back. After all, youâll be home soon, and these people are serious.â
âIt certainly sounds like it,â her father said. âWhich is why Iâm more worried about you than about me. Donât you think you should go to the police on this one?â
âI want to give it a little more, time,â Nancy said with a sigh. âI told you about Detective Ryan, remember?â
âI take it you two still havenât hit it off.â
âNo. He thinks Iâm a giant pain in the neck.â Nancy shook her head. âAnyway, Iâm being careful. Donât worry.â
âWell, Iâm sure you think you know what youâre doing, but just remember, you donât have eyes in the back of your head,â her father said, warning her. âForget about me, and look out for yourself.â
Nancy agreed, but she knew she wouldnât be able to stop worrying. To have her father threatened was frightening. She was glad he was going to be out of town, but she couldnât stop thinking about what might happen when he came back.
As Nancy was pacing restlessly around the kitchen, going over everything she had discoveredso far and not coming up with anything new, Hannah Gruen, the Drewsâ housekeeper, came in.
âYou look like a cat stalking a bird,â Hannah remarked.
Nancy laughed. Hannah had been with the Drews for fifteen years, and she knew Nancyâs moods better than anyone. âI am stalking a bird,â Nancy said. âMore than one, I think. The problem is, I canât decide which one to go after.â
âItâs this new case, isnât it?â Hannah asked.
Nancy nodded, deciding not to mention the threat to her father. There was no sense in having Hannah lose sleep over it, too. Not yet, anyway. âIâm on the right track,â she said. âBut I donât have any concrete theories or clues. Itâs beginning to get pretty frustrating.â
âWell, do you think wearing a path in the kitchen floor will help?â Hannah asked. Nancy glanced down sheepishly. âWhy donât you play some music or do something to relax?â
âI guess Iâll have to,â Nancy said. Then she realized that she was still wearing the same sweaty shorts and shirt she had worked out in, and her hair was tangled and matted. âBut first, I think Iâll shower and change. It might not help me solve the case, but at least Iâll feel human again.â
âBy the way,â Hannah said as Nancy started to leave, âIâm going to a meeting at the library in a little while, so I wonât be here for dinner. And since your father wonât be here, either, itâs leftovers for you.â
âFine,â Nancy said, knowing she wouldnât be hungry, anyway. âIâll see you when you
