of witnessing it.
“Yes. You’re free to go.” The officer looked at her apologetically. He damn well did owe her an apology, especially since it was all for nothing, the complete harassment of two innocent people.
“Thank you.” She didn’t know why she thanked him. He took up an hour of her time and spread her clothing along the road but it seemed like the polite thing to do anyway.
“Have a good day.” His words were just as uncomfortable as hers.
Sierra climbed into the passenger seat and slammed the door. She waited until Jett started driving away before she said anything. “What the hell was that about?”
“I don’t know.” He shook his head. “I was over at Jimmy’s last night and smoked a joint when I was wearing this jacket but the dog couldn’t smell that, could he?”
“I don’t know. Maybe.” She shook her head in frustration. Sierra didn’t know much about drug-sniffing dogs and their capabilities. She was just glad Jett didn’t have anything in here that got him arrested. “I thought you stopped doing that stuff?”
“I haven’t smoked a joint in over two years. At least until last night I hadn’t. I’m sorry, Sierra.”
“No harm, this time.” She was disappointed that he smoked a joint with his buddies, pissed that it cost her an hour of her time and glad things didn’t turn out worse. “You should probably stop hanging out with guys who smoke that stuff.”
“Yeah. I know.” He hung his head and gave her big puppy dog eyes that made him look like a little boy again. “Jimmy invited me over for a barbecue. I didn’t expect him to still be smoking weed. I thought he quit all drugs after he got thrown in jail that time.”
“You know you don’t have to join in.” She didn’t like the fact that Jett had smoked weed last night but there wasn’t much she could do about it. He was an adult now and she couldn’t control him, couldn’t keep him out of trouble, all she could do was be there when he needed her. “You’ve got a good job, a future. Don’t screw that up.”
“Yeah, I know,” he said again, looking apologetic. “You don’t need to lecture me. It won’t happen anymore. Do you need to stop anywhere on the way?” he offered.
“No. Just please get me home.” She didn’t need any more excitement today.
“Yes, ma’am,” Jett said imitating the police officer’s drawl and driving the last half mile to her house.
Tonight she was going to do some laundry, take a long, hot bath and convince herself not to be hurt by the fact that Jack didn’t want to spend the night with her, that he hadn’t invited her to come out with him and meet his friend.
He could have myriad reasons for doing that and her guessing and making his actions into something they weren’t wasn’t going to do her a bit of good. She had agreed to a fling with him, not a serious relationship, so spending time apart was natural. Even if she wanted to spend every second she could in his arms, it didn’t mean he wanted the same.

Chapter Six

The next morning Jack watched Sierra climb aboard the yacht like there was nothing wrong. Even though he knew she hadn’t been caught with any drugs, he was surprised she looked so relaxed and rested after what had to be an unnerving situation with the police yesterday. Hell, he didn’t sleep a bit last night, and he wasn’t the one who almost got caught.
She did her job without a hint of nervousness or stress. Even now, as everyone got off the boat on Sol Cay she acted as if nothing was bothering her, as if she didn’t have a worry in the world as she smiled and chatted with Crystal. Sierra was either a damn good actress or he was losing his mind. Again.
Jack wasn’t sure which one was worse. He wanted her to be innocent but he knew what he saw, and there was only one explanation. She got rid of the drugs somehow, somewhere, without him seeing.
It wouldn’t happen again. He was going to keep a close eye on the woman. “Do you
