all.
“Your loss,” Randi said with a shrug. She chugged the rest of her beer and handed Brian the empty bottle. Then she awkwardly climbed up on the bar and reached for Ty. He moved closer to the bar at Brian’s side and she wrapped her arms around his neck. Ty lifted her off the bar into his arms. “Take me to bed,” she told him, wrapping her legs around his waist. “I’m horny.”
“Yes, ma’am,” he said with a laugh. His eyes caught Brian’s as he turned and Brian wasn’t sure what he saw in them. The moment passed quickly as Ty headed toward the house. The two of them looked perfect together.
“That’s how you respond to a woman like that,” Jo Jo said wistfully. “Where can I get one?”
“Over here!” a voice called from the pool, and peals of laughter followed.
Brian had lost interest in everyone else. The sight of Ty carrying Randi like that had slammed into him with a painful sense of déjà vu. He’d been here before, standing on the outside watching Ty walk away with a girl in his arms.
Chapter 6
10 Y EARS E ARLIER
“Hey, Ty!” Brian heard someone yell. “Where are you taking that girl?”
The whole room erupted in laughter around them. The party was crowded, and the tiny apartment didn’t help. It seemed to Brian every square inch of space was occupied. He leaned back against the wall near the beer kegs, which were sitting on the kitchen’s pass-through counter. Even though he was officially off the clock, he was monitoring how much alcohol the university football players had. He didn’t want any incidents to mar what was turning into a winning season. He was only a student intern on the coaching staff, so it was easy for him to fit into scenes like this, unlike the older coaches. The head coach hadn’t ordered him to keep tabs on the players, but he read between the lines and the directive was understood.
The redshirt freshman Ty Oakes had surprised him this season. He was the third-string quarterback, but he was playing like a starter at practice. He’d really taken to Brian’s coaching style, which included heavy physical training every morning and lots of visualization. Brian was pretty sure the head coach would have kicked him out with a spiked boot if things hadn’t gone so well. He’d been pressured by boosters to give Brian the internship, and wasn’t too happy with a “New Age quack”—his words—on his coaching staff. Ty’s progress in practice was the main factor in Brian’s continued presence with the team, though he hadn’t told Brian that in so many words.
Ty had two weaknesses: alcohol and fucking. Not sex. Not romance. Fucking. It was as if he’d arrived at college and suddenly discovered what his dick was for. If someone on this campus was fucking, there was a good chance Ty was somehow involved. And apparently it was better when he was drunk. There was no doubt about it, Ty Oakes was the life of the party. Any party, since he apparently was an equal-opportunity fucker. Boys, girls, men, women, individually, by twos or threes or more, Ty loved it all.
And Brian hated it.
He could see Ty’s career spiraling down the toilet if he didn’t get a handle on it. He was good enough to start thinking about the NFL, or would be with a little more coaching. Ty had scoffed at the idea, never imagining he’d go beyond college ball. But Brian, and to his credit the head coach, had told him differently. He was wicked smart, quick on the field, and played a strong passing game. But Brian had seen all that amount to nothing before, because some young kid in college couldn’t keep a handle on his extracurricular activities. Brian genuinely liked Ty. A lot. He was determined Ty wouldn’t be one of those statistics.
The tiny apartment was actually Ty’s. He shared it with two other players, both of them also redshirt freshmen, in their second year of college and their first year of playing. Ty was smart enough to make Academic All-American, and would, Brian
