right off in her haste to
escape. She had to get away from him.
She wouldn't let him see her
tears.
“ Bryn!”
Swiping at her tears, she ran
down the corridor, blocking out his shouts. She kept running, not
really seeing where she was going.
She hadn't even realized she
had misted herself right out of the building. She had misted herself
blindly away and materialized right in the middle of the road.
She reeled back as a car sped
past her, missing her by inches. She had appeared so suddenly the
driver hadn't even seen her.
Bryn stumbled to the side of
the road, and doubled over in shock and pain. The PAC Headquarters
was behind her, and she could see Jett skidding out the revolving
doors onto the pavement.
She twisted away with a sob.
She didn't want to see his face. Not right now. Perhaps not ever.
She turned and ran, letting
the pieces of her shattered heart stab painfully into her chest with
every step.
CHAPTER
TEN
Jett leaned back heavily in
his chair and pushed away from his desk. He glared at the words on
his computer screen. The reports from the investigation unit had
been streaming in, but there were no leads. His Enforcers had been
watching, following, interrogating all the suspects on the list. One
by one, the names of all the likely suspects had been crossed off the
list. They had gotten a few new names from their interrogations, and
they had followed up closely. But all their efforts yielded nothing.
They were no closer to solving
the murders.
A ping alerted him to an
incoming message. Jett clicked on the latest report that had just
been filed by the team. It was a report from Scott and Bryn. Jett
squinted at the time stamp on the report. It was filed just a minute
ago. By Bryn.
He glanced at his watch. It
was three-thirty in the morning. Bryn was still in the building, but
she would be leaving soon. Jett scrubbed a hand down his face,
feeling the stubble on his chin. He had been in the PAC Headquarters
since nine this morning. But he didn't feel tired. His body was
tensed and thrumming. He felt edgy and anxious, not quite himself.
In fact, he hadn't been himself since that night with Bryn. He had
fucked her, and he had fucked up, big time.
He didn't need much sleep, but
these past few nights, he had hardly slept a wink. When he closed
his eyes, he kept seeing her face. He could still feel her, taste
her, smell her, every minute, everywhere.
He could never get enough of
her. He craved her, and...he missed her. He missed her cheeky
smiles and sharp retorts. He missed her scowls and growls. He
missed her challenging stares and questions. He missed everything
about her.
Since that night, she had been
avoiding him. She had been cool and professional when she saw him
again, and she kept their conversations short and to the point. She
filed her reports on time, and she worked hard on her cases. But she
wouldn't be alone in the room with him. And when she looked him in
the eye, it was either with cold indifference, or seething hostility.
He didn't blame her. He
blamed himself.
How could he have hurt her?
She was his, his female, his woman, his Bryn.
And she was the perfect woman,
perfect partner for him. She was strong, tenacious, full of fire and
fight. Even in her anger, her dark eyes blazed with raw heat and
passion.
She was so special, so
perfect, so...precious.
Jett let out a low, strangled
sound. Being apart from her was just sheer torture. Now that he'd
had a taste of her, he couldn't get her out of his goddamn mind. He
wanted her, needed her and ached constantly for her.
Jett logged off and grabbed
his jacket from the back of his chair. Bryn was still in the
building, but not for long. She would be leaving soon. He just had
to see her. Just for a while, and from a distance.
He would keep his distance
from her. He must.
Jett grimaced at the sudden
stab of lust and pain through his body. He closed his fists,
remembering the feel of her slender wrists in his hands. He had
slammed her
