are renting a long-tail boat for a ride out to the Phi Phi Islands,â he said. âOne of the islands is overrun with macaque monkeys. Whenever a boat pulls up, the monkeys swarm the beach, looking to be fed longan berries.â
She had no idea what a longan berry was, but whatever. âThatâs awesome!â she said. âFriendly monkeys?â
âCompletely tame. They eat fruit right out of your hand. Why donât you come along? We can fit one more in the boat. Sari arranged a picnic lunch. Weâll make a day of it. Monkeys, snorkeling, Singha.â
âYou have no idea how much I love monkeys,â she said, beaming. âItâs always been a fantasy of mine to feed a primate. Seriously! The closest Iâve come is throwing a pretzel to a squirrel.â
Nick stared at her mouth for a count of three, and then, finally, he came in for a kiss. His lips were warm from the tea, and he smelled like lemon and ginger. In a word: yummy. Sheâd never kissed an Asian man before. His cheeks were silken, and his hair, which she ran her fingers through, was thick as mink and just as soft. She sighed against his mouth, opening up, letting him in. His tongue was smooth and slippery as a mango. In one deft move, Nick pulled her onto his lap and held her tightly around her tiny waist. The only thing that stopped their kiss from going on forever was the cluck of the old woman behind the bar. Nick pulled back and rested his cheek against hers. âShe doesnât approve,â he whispered in Leandraâs ear.
She climbed off his lap, but couldnât let the moment pass unrecorded. âA quick selfie?â she asked, taking her phone out. He nodded and they posed, the beach behind them. Leandra immediately texted it to Sophia with the message, âIn love with Phuket.â She wasnât trying to make her friend jealous or flaunt her new life while Sophia was flailing so horribly. But Leandra shouldnât have to tamp down her own happiness. That wasnât how friendship worked.
Smiling at the idea, Leandra said to Nick, âLetâs go back to your place.â She had to see that villa! It probably had a king-size bed and a private pool right out the back door with jasmine and orange blossoms winding around a hidden terrace.
Nick frowned. âSariâs there.â
âShe wonât hear us.â
âShe might,â he said. âI canât really relax with her nearby. Itâd be too bizarre. You understand, right?â Oh, god, his accent when he said âbizarre.â It sounded like bizzz-ahhhhh. To die for.
âWe could go back to my room,â she said hesitantly. âBut donât judge me for what a dump it is. The pictures on the website are totally fake.â
He grinned. âIâll only be looking at you.â
âLetâs go,â she said.
Leandra took off her shoes and they walked back along the beach, stopping every few minutes to make out. When they got to the hotel, they laughed as they ran past a worker fixing a crack in the lobby wall. As soon as they were safely alone in her room, they fell on the bed before they could turn on the lights. Neon street signs filtered in, giving the room a pink glow.
Nick said, âI want to give you a massage.â
âOkay,â she said, confused. âShould I be naked?â
âNot usually for a Thai massage, but why not?â
He peeled off her dress. Heâd already seen most of her, the bikini leaving little to the imagination, but he gasped when he saw her breasts, like every man did. âIs there any part of you thatâs not perfect?â
She wished her feet were smaller, but she wasnât going to argue with him.
âLie on your belly,â he instructed. He found some lotion in the bathroom, and started rubbing her shoulders and back. She hadnât realized how tense and stiff she was, probably from the flights. Nickâs hands were
