DâIntino.â
âTo what do I owe the honor?â asked Rocco, lighting yet another of Italoâs Chesterfields.
âDid you call me âyour honorâ?â DâIntino replied, in confusion.
Rocco sighed and, with endless patience, replied, âNo, DâIntino, I didnât. Itâs just a figure of speech. What can I do for you?â
âAh, yes, I didnât think so. Well, I called you to say . . .â And with that the line went dead.
âHello? DâIntino, hello?â
Static and sighs from the other end of the line.
âOfficer DâIntino, hello?â
âYes? Iâm listening, Dottore!â
âYouâre listening, my ass! What is it? Why did you call me?â
âAh yes, in fact. I was looking, as you ordered me, to see if there were any missing-person reports, people who fail to come home, in other words, that kind of thing.â
âAnd?â
âThere was no need. Just a little while ago, Luisa came into the police station.â
Rocco, struggling to control himself, held in the curse of all curses he was about to utter. âOfficer! Who is Luisa?â he shouted.
âLuisa Pec. She says that her husband never came home last night. Or this morning, for that matter.â
âSo where is this Pec?â
âWho even knows where he is, Dottoâ? Luisa says the manâs disappeared!â
âWhereâs Luisa Pec! Not her husband!â shouted Rocco at the top of his lungs. Italo was barely able to stifle his laughter.
âAh . . . sheâs here . . . Hold on, should I put her on?â
âWhat are you talking about? Put who on, DâIntino?â Rocco stared at Italo. âIâm going to kill him. I swear to all the saints in heaven, Iâm going to kill him. Listen to me, Officer DâIntino, are you there?â
âYes, Dottore!â
âAll right.â Rocco took two quick breaths and tried to calm down. âNow do me a favor and tell Signora Luisa Pec to wait for me in the police station, and tell her weâll be there soon. Is that all clear?â
âYes, Dottore. Certainly. Youâll be here any minute. Now, if I can stop looking for missing persons, then I can start organizing the files in the personnel office, because today Officer Malta is sick, so I couldââ
âNo. Go on looking. We donât know for sure that this Luisa Pec is the right person, do we?â
âTrue. You have a point, Commissario.â
âOh, go fuck yourself, DâIntino!â
âYes sir.â
Rocco hung up. He looked at Italo. âHer husband hasnât come home and first thing, people assume the worst. For all we know, the guyâs holed up with some chippie.â
Italo nodded as he accelerated toward the police station. âDottore, listen, if you want I can have a word with DâIntino and tell him not to call you anymore.â
âLet it be. He wouldnât understand. Heâs my nemesis. You know, when youâve done a few things that are just so-so? Thereâs such a thing as divine justice. And Iâm paying it. DâIntino is just a tool that God Almighty is using to punish me. A manâs got to accept his fate!â
âBut why? What did you ever do?â
Rocco crushed out the cigarette in the ashtray and looked at Italo. âOne or two things you already know. Youâve been looking through the papers.â
Italo gulped.
âThe most normal thing in the world. Iâd have done the same thing. Letâs just say that it was best for me to make myself scarce down in Rome. Decisions from on high.â
âI see.â
âNo, you donât see. But let it suffice.â
Luisaâs eyes were the first thing he noticed. Big baby blues. Along with the oval face and copper blond hair that made her vaguely resemble an Italian-English actress.
âGreta Scacchi,â Rocco whispered to officer Pierron as
