Billionaire Twins: Two The Hard Way
Chapter 1: Monica
I ’m restless and can’t sleep. I’ve been up half the night studying for an interview at Westlake’s law firm. I’ve worked my ass off there for two years trying to fit in but nothing I do will get me a promotion or make me a non-equity partner. I sent in my credentials directly to Ross Westlake and asked for an interview and he has agreed to see me.
I’ve watched the clock enough and it’s time to get up and shower. I suck in a large breath before sitting down for a cup of coffee. My roommate Zoey is still sleeping she worked late at the gallery getting ready for the showing of a client’s paintings. It’s time to have a quiet moment before I meet the notorious bad boy and owner of the firm.
After coffee I’m too wound up to eat and too nervous. This is my chance to make up for all the time I didn’t date and all the time I turned down a date because I had to work on weekends. Tossing away eight years seeking a law degree and then marry someone who couldn’t or wouldn’t help me pay for those years of going to law school was not an option.
Most black men I met, some were prosperous and some were not, but one thing they agreed on. “You must be crazy to pay for law school. Don’t you know there are too many lawyers hanging around? If you throw a paper cup in the trash you could hit one. Be a nurse. Now that’s a good profession.” I can see myself now as a nurse. Crying for the little children, crying if someone dies, the list goes on and on.
Then someone had another bright idea. “Be a teacher. That’s a respectable profession.” That it is but I can’t live on the salary especially in New York with apartments renting for three thousand dollars. And that’s with heat in the winter.
I picked up my satchel, placed my resume and papers in I had been working on all night, and then I headed out to the subway. We lived uptown in Zoey’s mother’s apartment. It had been cheap and the rent was stable as long as no one bothered to check if there were new tenants. Her mother would show her face once a month to give the impression that she lived there but she resided in a swanky apartment on Fifth Avenue. She married well after Zoey’s father died plus she received a large insurance policy.
Zoey and I met at Columbia University Law School. I had come from Texas with a scholarship. It was my first time in New York and I was mystified at the energy and craziness of the city. I had no clue on how to navigate the subway or busses and the weather. The weather was wild. I never knew what to wear when I first got here.
Finally I reach the Westlake’s Law Office. I had been recruited in school because they told me I was the best and the brightest. So I slaved for them for two years.
I steady myself because I’m early. I sit outside the office of Ross Westlake Esquire. It’s written on the door. I’ve worked here for two years and never have I had the pleasure of meeting him. But I heard rumors. Rumors travel on a fast horse in a firm this large and personal.
Apparently he’s handsome and rich and he doesn’t need to work but he does and from what I hear he brings in the money and clients. He is known to take the new interns or clerks and mentor them, but fuck them first as an initiation. He invites one into his office before a meeting and before going home for the evening. He’s single and have a cock most men would envy. And stamina like a race horse, well that’s the talk around the office.
In two years I’ve had my fill with listening to water cooler gossip. I think I may know everything there is to know about Ross Westlake and I’m questioning why I would want to work at this firm. Does he ever do any work? From what I hear the only work he’s doing is climbing inside of women.
Paige working down in files had the nerve to ask me, “So Monica, has he had a piece of that dark meat yet? You’ll be in trouble if he’s a breasts man.” That was her way of making fun of my
