wants for nothing. Nothing.â
âIt wasnât the land he wanted. Hell, he could have gotten a ranch anywhere. And I didnât have to sell to him. You know that. Iâve sent bigger wolves than him back to the city with their tails between their legs after they ask to buy me out.â
âThen why?â Kirsten asked, nothing making sense now.
Hazel met her gaze. With a wisdom that was beyond even her seventy-plus years, she said, âSometimes a person can go a-wanting most when he has everything. Sometimes city folk arethe loneliest people on earth, but itâs not from having no companyâtoo much company there, if you ask me. Thatâs why Iâll never leave Mystery.â
Kirsten wondered if she understood. âAre you telling me itâs something bigger than the land Seth wanted?â
âMaybe. What do you think?â
She wasnât sure.
Her hesitation and uncertainty must have shown on her face, because Hazel said, âHeâs only your boss, cowgirl. You donât have to answer the question, just work for him. In fact, Iâm wonderingâjust a little, mind youâwhy you want to know all these things?â
A sly smile tipped the corner of the cattle baronessâs pretty mouth. âUnless, of course, you want to figure him outâbut then there go all your guarantees, right out the barn door with the pony.â
âHazel, youâre wicked, you know that? Just plain wicked.â Kirsten nudged her. âBut then, you havenât gone up against Seth Morgan either, and I donât see your schemes working there.â
âNever underestimate age and treachery, my dear.â The famous blue eyes winked at her. âI make eight seconds every time.â
Kirsten laughed at the womanâs bull-riding metaphor.
The only thing she could think to say next was, âGee, Iâm way overdue for a drink.â
Grabbing a cold beer, she left Hazel to her machinations and surveyed the crowd once more to see if anyone needed anything. The band was on break, but the crowd seemed to have enough ribs and cold drinks not to notice.
âKirsten.â
She turned around, surprised to find James standing there. He was staring at her, a hungry look in his brown eyes she knew all too well.
âBand on a break?â she asked, hiding her surprise beneath a pleasant tone of voice. âYou guys really sound good, by the way.â
âI didnât look you up, girl, to get your opinion of the band. I want to know how the hell you are.â He crossed his arms over his chest.
She smiled, another ploy to cover her nervousness around him. âFine. Just fine. And how are you?â
âWondering why we arenât married by now,â he answered sourly.
Inwardly she groaned. When sheâd hired the band to play for the barbecue sheâd hoped they wouldnât have to go there. âI thought weâd settled thisââ
âYou arenât dating anyone else here in Mystery. So why not me?â
âHow do you know Iâm notââ
He interrupted her again. âI know. Iâm from this town, remember? My friends keep me informed.â
Exasperated, she said, âWell, your friends might be wrong. Thought of that?â
He grabbed her hand and tried to pull her to him. âCâmon, little lady. You just think youâre better than everyone else here âcause you went to fancy schools and all, but deep down you know Iâm good enough. Maybe even too good.â
She closed her eyes, desperate to keep her temper. âJames, we discussed this. Weâre just not right for each otherââ
âIs this not right?â He bent to kiss her.
She pulled away.
He tried again.
âNo. I said no,â she protested, trying to wrench her arm free.
Suddenly he was pulled from her and thrust aside like so much trash.
âThe lady said no,â Seth growled, his sea-colored eyes
