okay!â said Mat.
âListen,â said Marguerite, trying to sound calm and cheerful, âhow about tomorrow I have a little chat over the phone with Head Office and Iâll get back to you? Meanwhile, you could both sit over there on that bench and watch.â
âThatâs all I want to do, anyway,â said Bill, wishing he could vanish like a magicianâs trick. âThis is Matâs idea, not mine.â
At that point, a tall girl came up to Marguerite saying, âI reckon this is a Truckerâs knot, but the others donât.â
âLetâs put it this way, Annabelle,â said Marguerite lightly, âit sort of looks like a Truckerâs knot, but it wouldnât save a life. Iâll come and join your group.â Marguerite smiled again at Mat and Bill, âYou really are welcome to stay and see what sort of things we do.â
Mat didnât want to just watch. To Billâs relief, she chose to go, but she told Marguerite that sheâd be waiting to hear from her.
Margueriteâs phone call came two nights later. Bill was over at the Grubsâ place helping Mat with some maths homework. Tom answered the phone. âMarguerite Bell! Bella! Bella!â he cried. âNo wonder Bill wants to join Guides.â Bill felt hot with anger, betrayed by a man of his own sex. You could hear Tom flirting away with Marguerite, and then he handed the phone to Mat. Bill noticed that Mat was being polite but cold.
âHellâs bells!â exploded Mat when she got off the phone.
âWhatâs up, Matty? Is Bill not enough of a girl for Guides?â laughed Tom who was in the same room. Ofcourse, all the Grubs and Pam OâConnell knew about Matâs scheme. Sheâd had to tell them to get that lift on the Monday to Guides.
âHead Office says that the organisationâs name isnât just Guides, itâs Girl Guides. Unless youâre a girl, you canât join. Itâs some sort of legal fact. I reckon weâd have to go to court to get Bill in.â
âPolitics!â said Tom trying to sound serious. âYouâre getting a taste of real life, you two! The idea of a legal fight just makes people give up.â
âTheyâre wrong about me,â said Mat. âI donât give up.â
âPlease, Mat. Just leave it,â begged Bill.
âIâve told you before, this isnât about just you and me!â said Mat, turning on Bill with fury in her eyes. âThis is about equal opportunity.â
Bill lifted his hands up protectively, âAlright. But I also donât think this fight is worth it.â
âWhat about a petition?â suggested Tom.
âNot fast enough. I want action now,â said Mat. âIn fact, Iâve just had an idea.â
Billâs heart dropped.

Local Boy Mis-Guided?
A furor has erupted over an equal rights issue previously ignored. Eleven-year-old schoolboy Bill OâConnell wants to join the Girl Guides. Hitherto denied opportunities to enjoy bush craft and camping, Bill is unable to attend Scouts because the local troupe has amalgamated with the Mt. Ewart troop â a one-hour drive from his own locality. As the official name of the Guiding movement is âGirl Guidesâ, Bill OâConnell is not eligible to join.
When reporters tried to interview Bill OâConnell, he would only say, âNo commentâ. However, close friend, nine-year-old Matilda Grub, praised Bill OâConnellâs determined stance and said, âIâm supporting Bill in his fight for equal treatment and equal opportunities. How come girls can join Scouts, but boys canât join Guides?â
State Secretary for the Equal Opportunities Board, Martin Brown, told this newspaper, âThe case is an unprecedented one and promises to create much healthy discussion and debate.â
