as she touched the keyboard, the phone rang and a smile danced across her face.
âHey, Baby, itâs about time.â
âHey, Mommy, I know Iâve been delinquent.â
âDelinquent is not the word, but we wonât fuss about it now that youâve called. Howâs school going?â
âItâs going good. Iâm more worried about you. How are you doing?â
âWell, you took long enough to check on me. Iâve sent you several text messages.â
âI apologize. Iâ¦I remembered what you said about having more than one friend in my lifeâ¦â
Mimi took a seat. âSomething happened between you and Asia?â
âNo, Mommy. Weâre still cool. I have a new male acquaintance.â
âOkay, Afrika Nicole Bailey. Remember what your goal is. You donât need any distractions or stumbling blocks to keep you from reaching that goal.â
âNo, Mommy. Iâm going to be an icon on Wall Street one day. I havenât lost focus. You can bet your bottom dollar on thatâWall Street jargon.â Afrika laughed.
âWell, Iâm not laughing. I donât want to see anything but Aâs and Bâs for grades.â
âNot a problem. But I didnât call to talk about me. Asia told me that you were supposed to meet her mother today for lunch. How did it go?â
Quiet ensued. Then Mimi took a breath and exhaled. âI didnât meet her.â
âWhy? Whatâs going on? You telling me to be careful about getting involved with Asiaâs family puzzles me. Mommy?â
âIâm a little apprehensive about seeing Brenda again; thatâs all. I sort of skipped out on her when she may have needed me most years ago, but I had my reasons. Iâm afraid that Brenda wonât forgive me and I donât think I can endure the thought of it.â
âBut, Mommy, she wants to see you. You shouldâve seen how her eyes lit up when she realized that you were my mother and that you were living right under her nose. I believe she wouldâve interrogated me all night if I had let her. Now, Asiaâs father, Mr. Christianson, thereâs something sinister about him.â
âWhat do you mean?â Mimi asked, holding her heart and her breath.
âItâs the way he stares at me, like Iâveâ¦â
âWhat do you mean, he stares at you?â
âIâm trying to tell you, Mommy. The first time I saw him oncampus, I understood that he might have mistaken me for Asia. However, the next time I saw him, at Asiaâs house, his eyesâ¦his eyes were spooky. Like they were lasers and he was drilling holes through me. Then the next day at the football game, there he was again with that twisted grin on his face, watching me like he was some kind of stalker.â
âStay away from him, Afrika. You hear me?â
âYeah, Mommy. Youâre scaring me.â
âIâm not trying to scare you. I never liked that man when we were in college. Even then, I couldnât put my hand on it,â Mimi lied for Afrikaâs sake, âbut Iâve always thought he was up to no good. I donât know what Brenda saw in him, but she said she was going to marry that man one day.â
âBut what has that got to do with him staring at me? And what made you think he was up to no good?â
âI canât explain it, Afrika. If I could, I would. I donât trust him as far as I can see him.â
âWell, he gives me the creeps. Heâs Asiaâs daddy and all, but you donât have to worry about me; Iâm going to stay as far away from him as possible. So why didnât you really want to see Mrs. Christianson?â
âWho said I didnât want to see Brenda? So many questions, Afrika.â
âThat need answers. Something strange is going on, Mommy, and you opened the can on my curiosity by telling me to be aware of Asiaâs
