that he was surprised that she hadn’t changed into the dress he had provided for her. “It wasn’t my style,” she said sharply.
“Not a problem, ma’am. We were just trying to help. Anyway, if you will come with me, we will get on our way so that the chief can answer any questions you may have.

As they drove a short distance from the building where she had been kept since her arrival, Leina thought to herself about how quaint of a little town this must have been before it all began to fall apart—as well as how well it had been kept up, for that matter. Most places she had seen along the way were in shambles from fighting and neglect. This place, however, would almost look normal if not for the lack of people out and about.
“The chief’s house is just up ahead,” Officer Fox said from the front passenger seat, interrupting her thoughts. “For security reasons, Officer Fernandez here will stay with the vehicle and keep it running while I escort you to the front door. Once inside, you will be safe as Chief Peronne has armed guards at his place twenty-four-seven. He’ll radio us when you are ready to leave, and we will be back to get you.”
Only nodding in reply, Leina’s heart raced in anticipation of what this meeting might bring. Oh please, God, let the children be here. I miss my babies, she thought as a tear ran down her cheek. Please let this nightmare come to an end.
As the vehicle slowly came to a stop in front of a large, white house that appeared far beyond the financial means of a municipal police chief, Officer Fernandez made an abrupt radio call in a muffled voice, followed by an equally muted response, and said to Officer Fox, “Good to go.”
“Roger that,” Fox responded. Turning to Leina in the back seat, he said, “Here we are. I’ll escort you inside. Just sit tight and wait until I open your door from the outside,” he said as he began to exit the vehicle.
Leina scanned the area around the house. The thick, lush hedges in front of the home had clearly been meticulously maintained and watered. The sharp, squared-off, decoratively-shaped bushes were surrounded by a well-kept and recently mowed lawn that seemed to have been cared for with great attention to detail. From her vantage point, she could see what appeared to be a pool house behind the home, adorned with the same elaborate window treatments and large white columns as the entryway at the main house. Her thoughts quickly shifted to the situation at hand, as her door was opened abruptly from the outside by Officer Fox.
“Ma’am,” he said, motioning for her to exit the vehicle.
Slipping out without saying a word, Leina followed Officer Fox up the decorative stone walkway leading to the front door of the home. As they approached the front door, it opened from the inside as a large, muscular man nodded to Fox and said, “The chief is in his study. You can take her on back.”
Turning to Leina, Officer Fox said, “Right this way,” as he shared a grin with the large man at the door. The man nodded as they passed, the door closing firmly behind them with the sliding deadbolt being immediately placed into the lock position.
Following Officer Fox through the home, Leina found the interior of the home to be equally as lavish and well cared for. As they approached a set of large, wooden double-doors, her heart raced as she listened for any sounds of children. To her dismay, all she could hear was the faint sound of jazz music emanating from the room.
Stopping just shy of the door, Officer Fox knocked, followed by the sounds of footsteps approaching the door from within the room. As the door slowly opened, Leina could see that it was Chief Peronne, dressed in pleated gray slacks and a French-cuffed white dress shirt with a black leather belt and matching wing tip, Oxford-style dress shoes.
“Ah, Miss Carson, it’s so nice to see you up and about,” Chief Peronne said with a smile on his face as he reached
