expression.
She must be thinking of Roderick.
Emma wanted to tell her about her visit to the demon complex, but she’d given Cyn her word. “I don’t know what to do,” Emma told Rachel. “I can’t just sit around. I know Cyn has a plan, but I wish we could go now.”
Rachel’s voice was flat. “They can’t just go without a plan. Demons are strange creatures. They take humans as slaves by force. I don’t understand why when they have so many that go to them of their own accord. I just hope they are not doing this to get to Cyn. I’m afraid they’ve decided to get proactive and are laying traps for the Protectors.”
The comment hit too close to home, a wave of guilt almost made her confess everything to Rachel. Instead, she forced a calm façade. “I don’t know what the demons are planning. I just know I have to get my sister. She’s all the family I have.”
Emma really didn’t know if, other than Cyn, Gerard wanted more Protectors, or why. Even though demons hated Protectors, it didn’t make sense. Of course, according to what her father told her, Roderick and Cyn were two of the most powerful Protectors alive and a huge threat to high-level demons. But there had to be more to it. Most likely, a vendetta or some kind of purpose was behind it. Other than making demon life easier, that is.
Rachel stood up. “If you will excuse me, I need to speak to Cyn for a minute. Please help yourself to more wine,” she told Emma as she left the dining room.
Emma strained to hear their conversation, but gave up after a couple of minutes with a frustrated sigh. She couldn’t hear a word over the teenagers’ loud game.

Rachel walked out to the back deck where he waited. Cyn hoped she had some answers to what Emma was, perhaps even why she was really there. He’d left them alone on purpose to see if Rachel could pick up something using her ability to sense emotions.
He blocked his emotions and thoughts as she neared him. The less she knew about Roderick right now the better it was for her. Although it tore at him, he hated not telling Rachel what he knew about Roderick. As much as he wanted to assure her Roderick was alive, he knew it would cause her additional grief later if it turned out to be a trick.
He would rather let her cling on to the idea that Roderick would return soon. He’d wait to see if he could get any confirmation about Roderick first and then let Rachel know.
After Roderick’s disappearance, Julian sent in a pair of spies disguised as demons to infiltrate the Atlanta area demons. He hoped they would find information about Roderick and the location of their coven.
Rachel leaned on the railing next to him, with a crinkled brow. “I don’t know what she is. I know she is at least part human. Perhaps she is part Fae, but I don’t sense she’s only human.” Her brow wrinkled. “Maybe demon, very recessive, but it’s possible.” She began to pace as she tried to figure out Emma’s origin. “Have you tried to seduce her?”
Cyn didn’t mind telling her. “We kissed and she was willing. I didn’t use any mind control. She didn’t deny me. Although I got the feeling she wasn’t too happy about it after.”
“Interesting.” Rachel shrugged and held her hands up. “Well, I’m stumped. A human is easy to seduce with mind control and demons are tricky and prefer to do the seducing. The only species that can block your prowess would be a shifter or another Protector.” She smiled at Cyn’s offended expression. “I know, I know. Protectors are only males and you don’t swing that way, but it was worth saying just to see the look on your face.”
Cyn huffed and turned away from her. “Rachel, I am going to go to the demon compound. I need to rescue that girl.” He heard Rachel’s intake of breath and she placed a hand over her heart. “You’ll keep Blue for me, won’t you?”
“It’s not worth it Cyn,” Rachel told him, her calm façade gone. “The
