another.â
âYeah, nobodyâs gonna beat my big jump,â Adam boasted.
âYour best jump was the one that flattened Old Taffy!â laughed Eddie.
The inspector smiled. âAll that remains to do now is something Iâve been looking forward to ever since I got here.â
âWhatâs that?â said Tom.
âArresting my ex-colleagues â including
Blackbeard
, as I believe you call him. Heâs the one whoâs really behind everything that goes on here.â
âWhen are you going to make the arrests?â asked Adam.
âJust as soon as the events are over and all the visitors have gone,â the inspector told them. âWe donât want to spoil everyoneâs fun, do we?â
Gareth returned from the hospital to find his friends wandering around the athletics track in the evening sunshine. They had been joined by Jacko, as both training camps had now been closed down, pending further investigations by the police.
âHowâs your gramps?â asked Eddie.
âHeâs going to be OK, thanks,â said Gareth. âStill got a bit of a headache, though, so theyâre keeping him in overnight for observation.â
âWeâre all goinâ home tomorrow,â said Adam. âMost of the coaches were taken away in handcuffs this afternoon.â
âIncluding Blondie,â sighed Eddie. âHeâs been really helpful to me. Good runner himself, too.â
âWell, he wasnât quick enough to escape the long arm of the law!â Tom grinned.
âPity you missed seeinâ Blackbeard get bundled into the back of a van, GG,â Adam chuckled. âThat made my day.â
âWonder what theyâll do with the clone-kid?â said Tom, glancing at Jacko, who failed to react. He seemed almost in a state of shock at what had happened.
âDonât much care,â Eddie muttered, and then attempted a joke. âYT might have to share another of Old Taffyâs cells, if you get my meaning!â
The group reached the high-jump area and flopped onto one of the large cushions.
âHope the camps will be opened up again some time,â said Adam. âYâknow, they could be used by people traininâ for the Olympics and that in the future.â
Tom smirked. âYou mean people like you.â
âYeah, people like me,â grinned Adam, before adding, âand you lot as well!â
âSo long as it is done right,â said Eddie. âNo drugs, no injections, no jungle-juices â and definitely no clones. What do you say, Jacko?â
He nodded in agreement. âI knew it was all wrong really,â he admitted.
âGlad to hear you say that,â Eddie said with satisfaction.
Gareth bounced off the cushion, unable to keep the news to himself any longer. âFoxyâs not the only one whoâs had that idea,â he told them excitedly. âGramps is thinking about buying the Old Manor!â
âWhat!â Adam exclaimed. âThat bang on the head must be worse than they think. Heâs lost his marbles!â
Gareth grinned. âNo, he hasnât. Didnât I tell you â heâs rich!â
The others looked at one another blankly.
âThink we might have remembered something like that,â said Tom.
âSorry, I suppose we do tend to keep it quiet,â Gareth conceded. âIt can change the way people treat you, if they know.â
âMaybe Old Taffy
did
know,â said Adam. âPerhaps he was gonna kidnap you and force Gramps to cough up loads of dosh.â
âDoubt it,â said Gareth. âI mean, if that were the case, he wouldnât have tried to kill him, would he?â
âHmm, you might have a point there,â Adam conceded.
âSo is your gramps coming to live here?â asked Eddie.
Gareth shook his head. âDonât think so, but I suppose he might come and stay every now and again.
