He pulled a cloth off one of the easels to reveal one of the shots Marisol had taken of Sadie in the fashion show. Then he yanked off another: this time, it was a photo of Jenna midair diving into the pool to save her cupcakes.
The crowd oohed and aahed. Each photo he unveiled was Marisolâs.
âMarisol Medinaââhe pointed at herââplease come up here and take a bow.â
âGo! Go!â Jenna said, giving her a push.
Leo looked utterly stunned. âMarisol,â he said, admiring the prints. âThese are amazing. Your mother is going to be so proud of you.â
âReally?â Marisol asked. âYou donât think sheâll be mad that I donât want to be a doctor?â
Leo gasped. âYou meanâ¦you donât want to go to premed in college?â
Marisol took a deep breath. âNo, not really. I thought I did for the longest time, but itâs not where my heart is. And someone told me I should follow mis sueños .â She looked at Jenna.
âWell, thatâs big news,â Leo said.
âDo you think Mami will understand?â Marisol asked him.
He took her hand. âI think sheâll be bursting with pride that her daughter is going to be a famous photographer one day.â
Marisol smiled. It felt so good not to have to lie anymore.
âThank you,â she said, hugging Harold. âI donât know what to say.â
âSay youâll do me proud,â he told her. âAnd I owe you a lot too. You reminded me of how sad Iâve been since I put my dreams away on the shelf.â

When the ship finally docked back in New York, Betty, Gabby, and the twins were waiting to greet the rest of their family. The pier was in a state of happy chaos: besides the people waiting and long lines of taxis, there were huge crowds of guests piling off the ship with luggage and souvenirs.
Leo scanned the crowd, searching for his wife.
â AquÃ! Over here!â Betty shouted.
âI missed you, mi amor ,â Leo said, swooping sweeping Betty into his arms and kissing her. âAll of you.â He handed each of the twins a plastic pirate sword, and they instantly began fighting with them.
âLook,â Gabby said, hugging Jenna. âAll my polka dots are almost gone.â
âMine too!â Ricky said, taking a break from his duel.
âNo more chicken pops!â Manny added.
Marisol hung back, waiting to greet her mom.
â Mija ! â Betty held her arms out to her. âHow was your trip?â
âGreat,â Marisol said. âAnd I have something for you.â
She handed Betty a framed photo she had taken of a sunset across the ocean. The vibrant colors practically jumped out of the picture.
âThis is beautiful,â her mother said. âYou bought this for me?â
âI took that photo, Mami,â Marisol said slowly.
âYou? You took this?â Betty held in her hands and stared. â Eres muy talentoso!â
âShe is very talented,â Jenna piped up. âAnd sheâs gonna be a famous photographer one day.â
âA photographer?â Mami asked, confused.
Marisol gulped. â SÃ , Mami. If itâs okay with you. I want to go to college and study photojournalism.â
Betty said nothing; she just stared. âA famous photojournalist? In our family? Que maravilloso ! â
âYou mean youâre not disappointed I wonât be a doctor?â Marisol asked.
â Mija , weâre proud of you no matter what you do,â Leo assured her. âAnd it takes a lot of courage to follow your dreams.â
â SÃ ,â Betty added. âAs long as youâre happy, Iâm happy.â
Jenna gave Marisol a little nudge. âTold ya so.â
âMarisol, wait!â Harold caught up to her just as they were leaving the terminal. âYou forgot something.â He handed her
