âThis is goodâbetter than animal skin,â she said.
âI guess it is,â Dave said. âWe may have an extra one for a gift for the chief.â
âIt will be welcome,â Princess Merle said. She looked around again and asked, âWhy are you different colors, and why are some of you bigger than others?â
âWell, I guess we all come from different places, and weâre not related to each otherâjust good friends. Weâve come from all over Oldworld.â
âOldworld?â
âWellâ¦yes.â Josh launched into a long explanation of how they came to be in Nuworld. He saw that the concept was entirely foreign to the princess. Finally he asked, âHave you ever heard of Goél?â
âNo, who is Goél? Is he a warrior?â
âWell, I think he might be if he set his mind to it.â Josh smiled. âI thought you might have heard of him.â
âNo. Have you ever heard of Maug?â
âMaug?â The name had an ugly sound, and Josh shook his head. âNo, who is he?â
âWe serve Maug, we of the Fedor people. He is strong.â
Instantly Josh caught Sarahâs eye. They knew at once that she was talking about some sort of god. It did not seem the right time to talk about such things, so hesaid simply, âWell, weâll talk about that when we meet your chief. Whatâs your fatherâs name?â
An odd light came into her eyes. âHis name is Chava.â
âChief Chavaâwell, Iâll be glad to meet him,â Dave said, smiling at her. âBut right now I think weâd better get some sleep.â
Most of them were tired, and they rolled up in their blankets. Sarah brought out the one extra blanket they carried and said, âHere, Princess, you can wrap up in this for the night.â
âThe daughters of Fedor do not need such things,â Merle said. Nevertheless she took the blanket and felt it curiously. âWhatâs it made out of?â
âItâs wool,â Sarah said. âDo you have sheep here?â
âWhat is sheep?â
Merle listened with apparent interest while Sarah explained the process of extracting wool and making garments from it. Then she said, âNo, we wear animal hides like this.â She touched her skirt, which was made of very soft, fine leather.
âWool is much warmer,â Abbey said. âMore comfortable too, Iâd think.â
âOur women do not seek comfort but glory.â
It was a strange statement, and for a moment there was silence. All of the Sleepers had heard the remark, but there was no comment. Finally Sarah said, âWell, you can have the glory. Iâll take a nice warm blanket. Good night.â
âGood night,â Princess Merle said. She sat with her back against the cave wall, facing the fire and holding the blanket.
Her eyes were half hooded as she stared into the dying blaze, and Josh, watching her, thought,
What a strange girl!
The next morning they ate a quick breakfast. Afterward, Merle seemed interested mostly in Abbey, who insisted on putting on a little makeup. It amused the red-haired girl, and she said, âWhy do you do that?â
âThatâs a good question.â Dave grinned. âIâd like to hear the answer to that myself.â
âI can tell you,â Jake said. âTo make herself attractive to the guys.â
âWhat is a âguyâ?â
âOh, I mean men. Thatâs what lipstick and powder and all that stuff is for.â
âItâs just to make you look better!â Abbey insisted, though she flushed. âWould you like to try some, Princess?â
Princess Merle stared at her with amusement in her eyes. âI do not think so. Our women do not care to make themselves attractive to men.â
âThen theyâre different from any women I ever heard of,â Dave said. He got to his feet and stretched, touching the
