France and back â not even my mum knows where I am.â
âWell, youâre home now,â Arnie reassured him.
Thomas uttered something under his breath but Arnie couldnât hear what he said.
âIf anything happens Iâll wake you.â
But Thomas was already lightly snoring so didnât reply.
Arnie watched the resting soldier for a while before walking slowly to the door. He peered out into the corridor. âEmily,â he whispered. âWhere have you gone? Are you hiding? Emily? Iâve got a bit of a problem hereâ¦â
A different noise answered him â feet were crunching the gravel outside.
CHAPTER EIGHT
The Hole in the Wall
Arnie rushed back into the Blue Room and leapt to the window. Outside he saw men carrying lamps. They were searching, slowly and methodically, spreading out across the garden. He ran over to the slumbering Thomas and tugged his hair.
Thomas jolted awake in a second. âWhat?â he said, fear in his eyes at first before seeing that it was Arnie, not a nightmare, nor an assassin.
âThere are some people outside. I saw lights,â Arnie confided.
âWhat? âere at the âouse?â Thomasâs face tensed.
âI think they came along the driveway,â said Arnie quickly, âperhaps theyâre going to search the woods?â
âI thought my luck was too good to last,â said Thomas realistically, getting up and heading for the door.
âWhere are you going?â said Arnie.
âIâve got to scarper â before itâs too late.â He paced around thinking. âI canât believe theyâd think to come up âereâ¦â
Thomas turned slowly to Arnie, his face hard like stone. âYou ainât betrayed me âave you?â
âNo!â
âHow do I know that? Iâve been out cold. You could âave sent word to the town!â
âI wouldnât do that!â said Arnie defensively.
Scurrying to the window, clearly panicking, he peered out. âItâs gotta be the police! Who else could it be? Theyâve come to get me!â he spluttered.
âWe have to be quick,â said Arnie. âThis way!â
They exited into the hall and rushed to the stairs.
âWhere are we goinâ?â
âSomewhere youâll be safe until theyâve gone.â
âWhere?â gasped Thomas.
âThereâs a room I tried to get into before â it might contain a secret hiding place.â
âMight?â
âYes!
Might!
Itâs the best idea Iâve got!â insisted Arnie, as they rounded a corner on the first floor landing.
âWhere is it?â
âNext floor,â panted Arnie. They raced on like cheetahs.
âYouâre pretty sure though â âbout this room?â
âNo,â said Arnie catching his breath.
âWhat?â cried Thomas.
âYou see it was locked when I was there before and though I found a key I was stopped from getting inside by Mr Silverthorne.â
âWhoâs Mr Silverthorne?â Thomas wailed.
âTake too long to explain. Anyway I hardly think youâre going to run into him.â
âWhy?â
âIâ¦think heâsâ¦just not around at the moment, thatâs all,â said Arnie hastily, not wanting to explain any detail.
Thomas looked desperate as they skidded to a halt outside the door with the letter âMâ proudly displayed above. This time there was no red rope refusing entry. Arnie stepped forward and tried the handle. âItâs still locked,â he said frustrated.
ââOw we going to get in?â fretted Thomas.
Arnie smiled mischievously. He stood on tiptoes as he had done before and stretched up, his fingers searching. âLetâs hope some things donât change,â he said to himself.
Sure enough, lying at the furthest reach from him was the barrel of a key. He coaxed it out
