wasnât my faultâ¦â
A chill settled over her heart.
âGo on then,â she said. âTell me the worst.â
Lang took a deep breath and seemed to struggle for words.
âThe fact isââ he began, stopped then started again. âWhen we metââ He was floundering.
âLook,â she said edgily, âwhy donât we just skip it and go home?â
âDonât you want to know what I have to say?â
âI probably already know what youâre going to say,â she observed with a faint, mirthless laugh.
âYou guessed? I donât see how you could have done.â
âLetâs say I have a nose for some things. Call it my cynical nature.â
âI donât think youâre as cynical as you try to pretend.â
Her temper flared. âAnd I donât think you know anything about me.â
He stared. âAll right, donât jump on me. Iâm harmless, Iswear it. Iâll believe that youâre anything you sayâhard, cynical, unfeelingâ¦â
âRuthless, unforgiving, cold-hearted,â she supplied. âIâm glad you understand.â
âI wish you hadnât said unforgiving,â he observed gloomily.
âWell, I did say it. I never give second chances. Now, if weâve got that settled, what were you going to confess? Something unforgivable, obviously.â
âWell, you might think so.â
Her dismay increased. âAll right. Iâm listening.â
âItâs like this. When we met in that clinicâI wouldnât normally be there. I work in another part of the hospital, and Iâd just started a vacation. But a friend who does work in the clinic got a stomach upset and had to take time off. They were short staffed, so I filled in.â
âBut whatâs so terrible about that?â she asked, trying to think straight through the confusion of reactions storming through her.
âThe thing is, he was back next morning. I did try to persuade him that he needed another day off, but he got an attack of heroics and insisted on returning.â Lang sighed and added distractedly, âA man canât trust his friends for anything, not even to be ill when he needs them to be.â
âWhat on earth are youâ?â
âSo when I came to see you next day I wasnât working in the clinic any more, and strictly speaking you were no longer my patient.â
Olivia stared at him in mounting disbelief. âAre you sayingâ¦?â
âThat I lied to you,â he said mournfully. âI approached you under false pretences, claiming that you were my patient when you no longer were. I deceived you.â
Olivia met his eyes and drew a quick breath at what shesaw there, a look of suspiciously bland innocence that masked something far from innocent. This man wasnât worried about being in trouble. He was inviting her into a conspiracy.
âYouâre overdoing it,â she said wryly.
âNo, honestly! On the pretext of medical privilege, I gained access to your body.â
âTo myâ? Oh, yes, you saw my bare arm, didnât you?â she said sardonically. âHow could I have forgotten that? Shocking!â
âIt was a little more than your arm,â he reminded her. âIf you want to report me to the medical authorities, well, Iâll just have to accept it, wonât I?â
âAnd if I kicked your shins youâd just have to accept that, wouldnât you?â she said sweetly.
âIt would be my just deserts.â
âDonât get me started on your just deserts or weâll be here all night.â
âWould we? Tell me more.â
âLetâs just say that youâre a devious, treacherousâI canât think of anything bad enough.â
âIâll wait while you think of something. After all, it was shocking behaviour on my part.â
âI didnât mean
