asked
sternly. “Rogue or not?”
Lucas cocked his head at her, and took another step
towards her.
Her plump, pink mouth became a tight line. “I am
not kidding, wolf. I am an Enforcer, and I am licensed to kill. I
am armed to the teeth with silver, and I will pump your hide so full
of silver, you won't even be a pile of ashes when I'm done. You'll
just be...” She huffed and blew some swirling dust motes and
ashes out of her face. “...gone with the wind!” she
finished in an ominous tone.
Lucas let out a low growl as he stared at the blood down
her neck and hands. Her hair was disheveled, her eyes were wild, and
her clothes were clawed and bloodied, but still she was
breathtakingly beautiful. He inhaled deeply, and her scent
immediately jolted through his senses. Her scent was sweet, lush,
completely female, and completely fearless.
He scanned the shadows around the warehouse. There was
nothing lurking in the shadows waiting to pounce. His mate was no
longer in danger. Satisfied, Lucas allowed his wolf to retreat, and
on his next exhale, he shifted smoothly back to human form.
He stalked towards her, the pull of her almost
irresistible. He saw her eyes widen and trail down his naked body,
settling somewhere just below his navel. A pink tongue darted
between her lips as she licked those full lips unconsciously. Her
breath seemed to catch as she took in his...size. Her cheeks flushed
deeper and he could almost hear her heart beating faster, harder.
    God, his mate was...aroused.
    As was he.
    His arousal was—very obvious.
She swallowed, blinked hard and forced her eyes up to
his face. “Werewolf,” she hissed.
“ The werewolf has a name. The name is Lucas
Rieve,” he said, offering his hand. “I'm not a rogue,”
he added, when she didn't take his hand. Instead, she seemed to be
glaring down at his hand in disdain.
“ Lucas Rieve,” she said, twirling her
daggers once through her fingers before sheathing them. “Do
you understand English?” she asked in a tone which was a tad
too calm and cool.
    “ Yes.” He frowned.
“ Then why didn't you get out of my way when I told
you to?” She turned to face him squarely.
    “ You were...”
“ I was on track, on target, in control. On the
highway to victory, and my Enforcer's Badge!” Her voice rose
as she walked forward. “This...” She gestured wildly.
“This is my Final test! And you blew it! You blew my test,
just because you wanted...you...what is it you want, Lucas?”
She glared at him, her chest heaving. “Why were you following
me? And why did you have to interfere with my Finals? Why did you
have to kill that rogue? Why!”
    Why?
Because you're my mate, that's why!
Part of him wanted to grab her, but a part of him, the
bigger part of him—his brain not his dick, listened to what she
was saying and understood her anger.
He was supposed to be her assessor for her Final test.
And he had broken every rule and code of conduct that assessors were
supposed to abide by. He had simply shifted into wolf and fought the
rogue in her place, thinking that she was in danger and that she
would not be able to deal with the danger on her own, in her own way.
She was right. He had interfered in her Finals, and he had
killed that rogue, thereby depriving her of the opportunity to prove
herself as a trained, qualified Enforcer.
    She had failed—because of him.
    “ I...” he began hoarsely.
    “ You what?” she seethed.
“ I'll fix this,” he said firmly.
She shook her head, turning away. “Lucas Rieve,
do you know...” She stopped suddenly, her eyes and mouth
rounding. Pivoting slowly on her heel, she stared at him and
blinked, shock and realization spreading across her features.
“You're Lucas Rieve,” she whispered at last. “You're
the PAC Alpha. I remember...”
When he nodded, she dragged a hand through her messy
hair and started to pace, mumbling to herself.
“ Charlotte, I will fix this.” He walked
towards her.
    She froze and
