look,” I grab the ultrasound photos from the tray table, “here are the photos of Baby Rodrigue from yesterday.” I hand them to him.
He takes them and smiles. “Baby Rodrigue. I like that.”
As my brother looks at the photos of my precious bundle, I get all choked up again and I start to sniffle.
Dade raises his head in alarm. “What’s wrong? Are you hurting? Do I need to call the nurse?”
Laughing through my sniffles, I say, “No. I’m pregnant, Dade. My hormones are insane. Everything makes me cry. I’m fine.”
He smiles at me. “Guess I’m going to have to get used to that.” Then, propping his hands on his knees and leaning forward in another stretch, he says, “You can pick a room out upstairs and we’ll start on the nursery soon.”
This makes me cry again. Standing up, he climbs into the bed with me and cradles me against his chest as I sob. He’s such an awesome big brother.
A knock at the door interrupts my cry-fest. A red head pops in and Dr. Bush says, “Good morning, Miss Rodrigue.” She looks at Dade and I see the appreciation on her face. “Hello, I’m Dr. Bush. I’ve been looking in on Miss Rodrigue during her stay with us.”
Dade smiles at the doctor as he slides out of the bed and stands up. “Hello, I’m Dade Rodrigue. I’m Clove’s brother. Thank you for taking care of her Dr. Bush.”
Dr. Bush’s brows disappear under her bangs. “Dade Rodrigue? Oh my.” Then she chuckles. “Suddenly it all makes sense. You’ve had the nurses in a stir all night, Mr. Rodrigue.”
His mouth drops open in shock.
The look on his face is epic. I can’t help it. I laugh. “Oh, Dr. Bush. That’s hilarious.”
She chuckles. “Well, I understand completely now.”
Dade sputters. “What? I’m sorry, what are you talking about?”
Dr. Bush laughs and it’s a beautiful sound. “You sir, are very attractive. All day yesterday people were finding reasons to visit this floor. I did not understand until someone in the cafeteria said that band members from Bayou Stix were up here.” She chuckles. “I don’t listen to your music, but my children do, and I know who you are. I do, however, know attractive men when I see them, and the men here yesterday were all gorgeous. You spent the night and the night shift nurses got a whole lot happier.”
Tears are rolling down my face in my mirth as I watch my brother, the famous rock star’s mouth open and close like a fish, with no words coming out.
He coughs and I laugh even harder. Dr. Bush winks at him. He’s still silent so she turns back to me. “You my dear, are all cleared to go home. I just need to check you over one last time and you need to keep your appointment with Dr. Bird, but as soon as I leave the room, I’ll start your paperwork to get you out of here. I know you’ll be much more comfortable at home.” She smiles. “Any questions?”
I shake my head and she says, “Ok, well good. You are free to resume normal activities, just be mindful of the fact that you are pregnant, so no heavy lifting. And no overtly wild sex, though you are free to resume normal sexual activity.” Dade starts choking and gets up and walks out of the room. Dr. Bush smiles and keeps talking though she’s trying to cover her smirk. “I’d like you to use this strainer at home. We’d like to test the stone once you pass it. It may be slightly uncomfortable when it passes, but you shouldn’t have any further pain.”
She hands me a white strainer and over her shoulder, I see Dade’s face blanch in disgust through the tiny window on the door. I chuckle.
Dr. Bush closes the curtain to give us some privacy while she completes her examination. In just a few minutes, she’s done. She takes my hand and squeezes it. “Good luck, Miss Rodrigue. I’m sure I’ll see you in passing. You have more than five months of pre-natal appointments to get through.”
I rest my hands on my stomach and smile as I thank her and she leaves the room. Dade
