embarrassment washed over me.
"Okay, can I go get my attorney? He's sitting in that club at the bar," Will said, pointing to the building we'd just left.
Joe! Oh thank God .
"No. You're not going anywhere," the voice said.
I heard Will sigh heavily. "Fine, I'll just call him."
I prayed Joe answered, and could've cried when he did.
"Hey Joe, could you come out to the parking lot on the corner of Greene Street and Elm? Lacy and I are getting arrested. No shit. Okay, thanks," Will said into the phone. "He's on the way."
The officer groaned but stepped away from the truck to wait. "Are you okay?" Will turned and asked me.
"No, Will. I'm not okay," I said rubbing a hand over my face. My father was going to find out! I couldn't have a record in the journalism world, no matter how minor an offense. Oh God!
I looked up and under the street lights I saw Joe come striding down the sidewalk to the parking lot. His usual laid back demeanor had been replaced with Defense Attorney Joe's no nonsense swagger.
"What's going on?" he asked the cop.
"I could hear the woman's screams halfway across the parking lot," he started, and I covered my face with both my hands.
"So, you couldn't wait to get a peek, right?" Joe asked the cop.
"What? I didn't know if she was in distress, or what was going on, until I approached the vehicle."
"Righhht. Will, what was Ms. Pierce screaming?"
Will cleared his throat as he thought it over. "I believe there were some 'Oh Gods' but the, ah, loudest was probably the 'Yeses."
Joe made a noise like he was suppressing a laugh and coughed to cover it up. "So, Officer, you heard a woman screaming " Yes " and thought she was in distress?"
"Like I said, I didn't know what was going on so I approached the vehicle and that's when I saw the woman … fornicating on top of the man."
"How do you know they were fornicating?" Joe asked.
"She was ... topless and bouncing up and down. I don’t see a damn hobby horse on his lap, so what else do you suppose they were doing?"
I wanted a hole to open up in the truck and swallow me down into it.
"How long did you watch before you alerted them to your presence?" Joe asked.
"What? I wasn't … I'd just …" the cop sputtered.
"We'd just finished when he knocked on the window," Will interjected.
"Right. I can't wait to tell my boss, Mr. Pierce that you got an eyeful of his daughter."
"Mr. Pierce? As in Pierce, James & Moore?"
"Yeah. The firm I work for," Joe said.
My dad was a civil attorney, and everyone knew he'd sued the police department several times during his career.
"Why don't you let Mr. Reavis and Ms. Pierce go on their way if they promise not to…fornicate in public anymore?"
"They're not getting special treatment just because she happens to be an attorney's daughter."
Fuck . My dad was going to kill me.
"Then just charge me, but not her," Will offered sweetly.
"She was the one flashing her breasts and screaming. If one of the two of you should be charged it's her."
"It was my fault. I take full responsibility," Will told him. Joe made a disapproving sound.
"I'll write you both up on misdemeanor indecent exposure citations. I'm sure your attorney can convince the prosecutor to go easy on you," the officer said, asking for our driver's licenses before he walked away.
"Jesus," Joe muttered, running his hand through his hair. "You two just couldn't wait until you got home to get your freak on, could you?"
"How bad is this, Joe?" Will asked.
"An indecent exposure citation is nothing for first offenders. A few hours of community service and I'm sure the prosecutor will dismiss it. Then we can petition for an expunction to remove it from both of your records. It'll be like it never happened. But it also means you can't ever get any future charges, since you only get one expunction in your lifetime."
That made me feel a little better about things. "How long does all that take?" I asked him.
"Ah, probably no less than five or six months, and
