want to go for a ride this afternoon?â Alice-Miranda asked. âMr Trout cancelled choir practice and I really want to give Miss Hephzibah and Miss Henrietta their chocolates from Switzerland.â
âGood idea,â Millie said. âI donât think theyâll last much longer sitting on the shelf in our bedroom â theyâll probably go off.â
âOr youâd eat them, more likely,â Sloane teased.
âDo you want to come with us?â Alice-Miranda asked. âWe could walk if youâd rather not ride.â
âNo, itâs fine,â Sloane replied. âI have to finish that book, and you know me and horses are still not exactly the best of friends.â
The girls hurried into the dining room, where a long queue of students had already formed at the servery. The smell of grilled cheese filled the air and it wasnât long before everyone was seated and enjoying their afternoon tea.
Millie looked around as she munched on her cheese toastie. âSo where is Caprice?â
âSee, I might be right,â Sloane said. âAny minute Miss Grimmâs going to march her in here and sheâll make a full confession.â
Millie shook her head. âNo way.â
Seconds later, Ophelia Grimm entered the dining room alone and glanced around.
âTold you,â Millie said.
But Alice-Miranda was curious as to where Caprice could be. It seemed as if everyone else was present â even Mrs Howard and Mr Charles were in the room. Mr Trout was there too, so Caprice couldnât have been at another rehearsal.
The headmistress walked to the podium and switched on the microphone. Sheâd looked everywhere for Miss Reedy and Mr Plumpton but hadnât been able to locate either of them. The news couldnât wait any longer; theyâd just have to find out about the dog show at the same time as everyone else. âGood afternoon, girls and staff,â she began. âI have some rather exciting news and I wanted to tell you all straight away. Weâre going to have to form working groups immediately as time is of the essence.â
There was a hush of whispers around the room while girls speculated about what this big announcement might be.
âWho likes dogs?â Miss Grimm asked, and hands shot up all over the place. âGood, because in a couple of weeksâ time Winchesterfield is going to be hostingthe largest and most prestigious dog show in the country,â the woman declared.
Chatter erupted around the room.
âCool,â Sloane said. âI wonder if thereâll be some really weird ones, like those hairless Chinese.â
âI think theyâre called Chinese crested,â Alice-Miranda said with a smile.
Millieâs eyes widened. âWhat about those huge Bernese mountain dogs, like the one we saw in Switzerland? Theyâre gorgeous.â
âHopefully thereâs none like Princess Gertie,â Sloane said, wrinkling her nose.
âCan we enter our own dogs if our parents will bring them?â a young girl called Ella asked.
âEveryone, please calm down,â Miss Grimm ordered. âAnd no, Ella, this is a professional event. Itâs a bit like,â the woman hesitated, thinking about how she was going to put it.
âMiss Universe for dogs,â Sloane called out. âExcept that some of them are boys.â
The girls laughed.
Millie put up her hand. âAre we hosting Chudleighâs Dog Show, Miss Grimm?â
âNot hosting â just helping â but, yes, thatâs the event, Millie,â the woman said with a nod.
âWow, Chudleighâs is big,â Millie said. âIâve been with my mother. She was one of the official vets a couple of years ago.â
âYou might be able to give us some pointers then. All I know at this stage is that Mrs Parker, as President of the Winchesterfield Show Society, is in charge and she is enlisting as much
