corsair we drug beneath the keel.â Sebastian cupped his chin. âMayhap youâd like to see?â
Liam was near quivering with excitement and curiosity. Mal saw the reluctant denial on his furrowing brow and spoke first.
âGo up, lad,â he said. âItâs fine. Iâll wait here.â
âBut, my lord!â Liam looked horrified. âI donât knowâÂâ
Sebastian interrupted, putting fingers to lips and splitting the air with a piercing whistle to match Malâs earlier attempt. Immediately a man popped head and shoulders over the deck rail.
âOi?â the man shouted over the wind. âWhatzit?â
âVisitor, Fiennes!â Sebastian called. âCome and show him up.â
âMy lord!â Liam tried again, but Mal cut him off with a wave of his hand.
âHold tight to the ropes,â he said, watching as Fiennes shimmied his way to the deck. âAnd donât touch the cutlasses. Iâll be here when youâve looked your fill.â
âHere to see the cutlasses, are you, lad?â Fiennes had even fewer teeth than Sebastian. âWell, donât stand about with your tongue hanging. Come on, then.â
Liam gave in. He plucked the rose crown from his brow, set it on the planks, and jumped after Fiennes without further protest, scurrying up the rope ladder with an unnatural ease that might have made a more observant man pause. Sebastian only shook his head, pinched a fresh twist of tobacco from a pouch at his belt, and popped it between his lips.
âWhat happened?â
Mal arched his brows. âI became vocent, Sebastian. Itâs been a while; I assumed youâd hear.â
âMost powerful man in the kingdom,â his cousin quoted, less than impressed. âI wiped your tears the day word of Rowanâs loss made Selkirk, or have you forgotten? No.â He swiveled and spat. âI meant the lad. What happened to his face and hands? More of your magic?â
âNo.â
Sebastian waited a beat, then shrugged. âCome to pass on the title, have you? Youâll not be wanting it, I imagine.â
âYou imagine correctly,â Mal said. âIt was never mine to begin with.â
âNay, it was Rowanâs.â Seb pursed his lips in thought. âYour mam still believes heâd have done well by it, but Iâm not so sure.â
âOh?â Gulls were diving the pier, shrieking. Mal caught a glimpse of black wings, and winced.
âNay. Rowan never shed a tear in his life. Even as the tide dragged him down, he didnât so much as squeak. Loved him like a brother, I did, but nothing ever roused him to passion, do you understand?â
Mal frowned.
âMusic,â he said after a moment of thought. âDancing. Good drink. Pretty lasses.â
âYou remember differently than the rest of us.â Sebastian rolled his shoulders. The hem of his faded tunic flapped in the rising winds. âNo matter. Itâs been a long time, hâainât it? Come aboard?â It was a challenge.
âNay,â Mal replied. âThe pirates donât look friendly.â
Sebastian stiffened. âPirates?â His bare, cracked feet scratched on the planks as he turned to stare up at his ship. âWe havenât any pirates aboard.â
âYouâve plenty of them,â Mal said, mildly, showing his teeth. âOr did you think the rogues wouldnât haunt the ship drowned them beneath her keel? Your afterdeckâs cluttered with vengeful spirits, cousin.â
Sebastianâs wrinkled face slackened. âNay, not truly?â He shuddered. âDonât you go spreading rumors, now, Mal. No good seaman will willingly sail a ghost-Âridden ship. Word gets out sheâs haunted, The Laughing Queen âs dead in the water.
Mal fixed his smile in place as Liam popped over the rails.
âIâve no patience for rumors,â he said,
