of prison.â
Kent studied Clint for a moment, then said, âIf he did, thatâs his business, ainât it? Whatâs your interest?â
âWith my reputation, it pays to keep tabs on some people,â Clint said vaguely. âThanks for your time.â
âSpeakinâ of leavinâ town,â Kent said, âhow much longer you figure on stayinâ?â
âNot much,â Clint said. âDonât know for sure yet, but not much longer.â
âWell, enjoy the rest of your stay. I donât think youâve got anything to worry about from Calhoun.â
âOkay, thanks.â
Clint walked to the door, then turned back.
âWhatâs this Calhounâs first name?â
âTito.â
âTito?â
âMexican mother, Irish father,â Kent said. âWhy?â
Clint shrugged.
âLike I said, just keeping tabs.â
He left the sheriffâs office, then stopped just outside the door. He had a feeling the lawman wasnât telling him everything he knew about Tito Calhoun.
But he thought he knew who could tell him more, and he headed for the telegraph office.
TWENTY
Now that Calhoun and Kent had established that they knew each other, it was no problem for Calhoun to enter the lawmanâs office soon after Clint had left.
âAdams was just here askinâ about you,â Kent said.
âSo what?â
âWhat did you say to him?â
âNothinâ,â Calhoun said, sitting across from Kent. âI just got to know him a little.â
âYou think that was smart?â
âHe saw me ride in,â Calhoun said. âWe was both at the livery gettinâ a horse. It woulda looked bad not to say somethinâ.â
âMaybe.â
âHe knows from my clothes and my horse that I just got out. Hell, he can tell. It still donât mean nothinâ. Relax, Tom.â
âYeah, okay,â Kent said.
âWhatâd you tell him?â
âNothinââ Kent said. âI handled it okay. I told him we were acquainted.â
âYouâre sure heâs gonna be at this game?â
âHeâs playinâ in the game,â Kent said. âI got that for sure.â
âWe need to know who else is in that game,â Calhoun said. âWe canât make a move without knowing that. We donât know what weâll be walkinâ in to.â
âWhat if we just wait until the gameâs over and rob the winner?â Kent asked.
Calhoun shook his head.
âYou think those fellas are gonna come out pattinâ the winner on the back? Or that the winnerâs gonna be smiling and actinâ like a winner? That ainât gonna work, Tom. Weâd have to rob all of them just to find the winner.â
âSo what do we do?â
âWe take the game while itâs in progress,â Calhoun said.
âYou meanâ¦we go in?â
Calhoun nodded.
âAnd thatâs why we have to know who is at that table,â Calhoun explained. âAnd how many men weâre gonna need. We canât walk into that room blind, and walk into a bunch of guns.â
âI get it,â Kent told him.
âThen get it,â Calhoun said. âGet the information.â
âI will.â
âIâve got some men standing by in Selwin,â Calhoun said. Selwin was the next town over, going north. âWeâll pick up however many we need on the way, but itâs up to you to find out how many that is.â
âAll right,â Kent said. âIâll find out. I told you Iâd get all the information we need. But thereâs something you need to understand, too, Tito.â
âWhatâs that, Tom?â
âIâm in charge of thisâ¦expedition.â
âJust call it a job, Tom,â Calhoun said. âWeâre pullinâ a job.â
âFine,â Kent said, âitâs a job, but itâs my
