A
Peyton Family Christmas A
Southern Arcana Free Story (Set
between Crossroads & Deadlock.)
â I
didnât steal the jet.â Nick tightened her grip on the ranch truckâs
cold steering wheel and cast a sidelong glance at her passenger. âI
borrowed it.â
â Uh-huh.â
Next to her, Kat squinted out through the frosted window. âI
canât remember the last time I saw this much snow.â
â A
white Christmas.â Derek had been enjoying it, but it paled next
to how much he wanted to see his baby cousin. âHeâs going
to be so glad to see you.â
â Who,
Derek?â Before Nick could answer, Kat half-laughed. âNo,
of course Derek. Luciano and your dad probably arenât
breathless with anticipation or anything.â
â Weâve
all missed you.â
â I
missed you too. Iâve just...been busy.â
You
didnât have to be an empath of Katâs caliber to hear the
lie, but Nick let it slide. âMahaliaâs here, you know.
For the holidays.â
â Yeah?â
For the first time since Nick had coaxed Kat out of her dim,
cluttered apartment, the girl seemed to brighten a little. âI
thought sheâd be back in Boca by now.â
She
probably would have been if Nickâs father hadnât asked
her to stay. âMy dad is a little worried about Michelle. Well,
heâs worried about Michelleâs worrying, if you know what I mean.â
â Yeah.
Iâll be able to tell. If sheâs worrying too much, I
mean.â
Again,
you didnât need to be an empath to know. âShe is,
definitely, but thereâs no way around it.â It had been
long enough for Nickâs shock to wear off and the grim reality
to set in. âThe love of her life is dead, and the only thing
keeping her alive is this charade with Luciano.â
A
quiet noise of sympathy escaped Kat. âPoor Michelle.â
Driving
with tears in her eyes was a recipe for disaster, so Nick dashed them
away and shook her head. âYouâre going to like Luciano.
Heâs a good guy.â
â He
must be.â Katâs borrowed winter coat rustled as she
turned a little in the seat. âHave you heard anything about how
Andrewâs doing?â
According
to Alec, her main source for updates, Andrew had had a rough time of
it, but was doing surprisingly well. âHeâs making it. A
strong wolf, which makes it harder in some ways, but heâll be
all right.â
â For
sure? Thereâs nothing else that can go wrong?â
â No.â
Pretty much everything that could have changed or gone south in
Andrewâs life already had. âHeâs going to be fine,
Kat. Heâs still himself, and heâs doing a good job of
getting the wolf under control.â
â Okay.
Heâs fine.â Kat sucked in a breath and let it out in a
gusty, tired sigh. âNew problem. I, uh, didnât know I was
coming up here. Obviously.â
â I
didnât kidnap you, either,â Nick said automatically, just
in case. âWhat do you need? Clothes? Contact lens solution?â
â Presents.â
She sounded honestly concerned. âI donât have presents
for anyone.â
It
was so unexpected that Nick blinked. âYouâre worried
about stuff ?â
Out
of the corner of her eye, she caught Katâs cheeks turning
bright pink. âItâs Christmas. I donât have anything
to give everyone.â
â Hey,
youâre here. Thatâs a million times better than stuff.â
Kat
wrinkled her nose in a gesture Nick hadnât seen in months.
âDepends on who you ask.â
Almost
a joke, and it gave Nick hope. âAsk your cousin in about ten
minutes, because this is it. The ranch.â
Kat
turned to look out the window again, a little of her old curiosity
bubbling to the surface. âSo itâs ten minutes from here
to the main house?â
