rang. I looked at it. It was Justus. I smiled.
Whitney returned to the room with the other cordless phone on her right ear and a grin on her face. âHold on, Justus. Sheâs right here . . .â
She stood beside me, muted the phone, then elbowed me without dropping any of the tools in her arms. âWhy didnât you tell me Justus was here today?â
âBecause I didnât have time to. Plus, Avaâs disappearing acts almost blew my night with Justus.
âYour night?â She grabbed me by my pajama top. âDid yâall go on a date? And you didnât tell me?â
âNo, technically no. He brought dinner here.â
âShut the front door,â Whitney squealed. âAnd now heâs making a booty call.â
I snatched the phone from her. âHeâs a minister. You canât say stuff like that.â
âHmm . . .â She pursed her lips. âHeâs a man, ainât he?â
âGirl, get a grip. He is a man, not one of your wang-ster boy toys.â
âWhatever.â She looked at the phone. âI bet you five dollars heâs waiting on the phone.â
I frowned. âAnd what would be the point of this bet?â
âAs long as weâve been talking . . . if heâs still holding on, he wants more than just to talk with you.â She giggled. âOoh. Why would he want you at one in the morning? You know what that means? He wants you for life, wifey.â She laughed louder.
âStop it. Please get that thought out of your head.â I checked the phone to see if he was holding. âIt probably has something to do with his niece. He came over here today to convince me to work for him. Apparently, some mysterious Romeo has her nose wide open. The child probably snuck out the house tonight.â
âTtttt.â Whitney shook her head as she dumped a steel chain and two hammers in a duffle bag. âBeen there, done that.â
I plopped myself back on her bed. âI canât help him right now.â
âSo what are you going to do?â
âTell him the truth.â I lifted the receiver and unmuted the call. âHello, Justus. Is something wrong?â
âEverything is fine. Actually, Iâm calling to find out if youâre okay. I heard you screaming.â
âHow did you hear me? Are you outside my house again?â
âNo, not exactly. I needed to take a jog.â He chuckled. âFor some reason, I couldnât sleep. Why are you awake? Is it because of Ava?â
âAre you psychic, too?â
âNo, but I saw someone that resembled you back out of your driveway in the same nice car I noticed parked in it when I dropped by earlier today.â
âOh, yes.â I shook my head. âYes, you did. How is Kelly, by the way?â
âSheâs fine. She just got home. From where, I have no clue.â
âYou gotta be kidding me.â
âNo, I wouldnât kid about the real reason Iâm jogging around the neighborhood at one in the morning.â He huffed. âI needed to burn off some steam before I returned home.â
âIâm sorry.â Whitney knelt beside me and leaned her head on the other side of the receiver. I rolled my eyes at her. âI know how taxing family can be.â
âIâm scared for Kelly, and that makes me feel helpless,â he said.
âAgain, I know exactly how you feel, but I canât talk. I have to see about Ava. Something is horribly wrong.â
Whitney tapped my shoulder. âWe need to get to Decatur before something else bad happens to Ava.â
âYouâre right. I do,â I said to Whitney, then stood up.
âWhat do you mean?â Justus asked. âWhere are you going?â
I waved Whitney off again. âIâm going to Avaâs home, to see if sheâs okay.â
âNo, we all are,â Whitney shouted.
I turned to Whitney. âWhat did I tell
