stop me,â she said. As she pulled on the door, something fell out of the pocket of her trench coat. She scooped up the item but not before Frank and Joe saw what it was: a fairly new set of lock picks. McLean glared angrily at the brothers. âThis is illegal detainment,â she said.
âOn the contrary,â Joe said, stepping in behind her. âWeâre just holding you for the police.â McLean was now trapped between her VW and the car next to it, with the Hardys cutting off her only avenues of escape.
She tried to yank open the door again, but Frank stopped her. âLet me go, you two!â she cried. âStevenâs life is in danger! Iâm the only one who can save him!â
âI doubt that,â Joe said. Then something in the Beetle caught his eye. âHey, Frank. Take a look inside the car.â
Frank looked in, being careful not to let McLean slip away. The floor of the vehicle was strewn with papers; some of them had Steven Royalâs letterhead on them, others bore the seal of NCU. âI think,â he said, âwe may have foundout who ransacked Royalâs condo and Tochiâs houseâit looks like she took a few souvenirs.â
âI didnât ransack anything,â McLean complained. âThose arenât souvenirs, theyâre clues. Youâd have done the same thing.â
âNo, we wouldnât,â Joe said. âAnd weâll let the police decide if those papers are evidence in this case, or evidence that youâre a thief.â
Frank smiled grimly at McLean. âI think you may have some trouble explaining the lock picks. If you were better at using them, youâd have left fewer clues.â
âIâll get security,â Chelsea said, heading for the building.
âYouâve got to listen to me,â McLean said. âI didnât do anything wrong. Iâm only trying to help Steven Royal. Heâs in big trouble, I just know it. Heâd never disappear like this before the release of a big game. He needs that game.â
âNeeds it how?â Joe asked.
McLean looked around furtively, then said, âHeâs almost broke. He made some bad investments.â
âAnd I suppose you learned that from some of those papers in your car,â Frank said.
âIt doesnât matter how I know,â McLean said. âI was just trying to protect him, but it didnât work. Something terrible has happened to him, I just know it. Iâm looking out for him. . . .â
âFollowing him, you mean,â Joe interjected.
âHe slipped away from me last Monday,â McLean continued, âand he never came back. Didnât he know I was just trying to protect him?â
âWas he driving his car when he got away?â asked Frank.
âYes,â McLean said. âHe was heading north, but he lost me on an interchange. I think he did it deliberately. I didnât know anything was wrong until he didnât come back for a few days. That was when I decided to take things into my own hands.â
âSo, you used those lock picks and looked around in his place, and Tochiâs, just trying to protect Royal,â Joe said.
âYes. I know heâs in trouble. Heâs been nervous lately, but I donât know why. I just want to help.â
âIâm sure you do,â Frank said. McLean had become calmer, and he hoped to get more information out of her before the police arrived. âSo, what do you think happened to him?â
âAnne Sakaiâs ghost got him,â McLean said matter-of-factly.
Both Hardys tried not to look shocked. âSakaiâs ghost?â Joe asked skeptically.
McLean crossed her arms over her chest. âSheâs out to get him for driving her out of the country. She decided she couldnât compete with him, so she ran away. Then she got killed. So herghost blames him for it. Now sheâs done something
